What is the Beef with Factory Farming?
When you think of a farm, do you think of a small family owned farm with a few cattle out in a pasture or do you think of a large factory style building with cattle shoulder to shoulder on a hard cement floor? Throughout America, Factory Farms are becoming more and more popular every day. A factory farm is the condensing of farm animals, usually chickens, pigs and cows, into a very small area (“Factory Farms Produce…”). Factory farms produce meat, eggs, and poultry at a high rate (“Factory Farms Produce…”). Factory farms provide jobs for many people throughout the United States (“Introduction to Factory Farming”). Factory farms may employ many people and provide many jobs, but they also come with high health risks and low job security. Workers experience harmful health factors while working in the barns with manure and the gases that protrude (“Industrial vs Family Farms Comparison”). Factory farms are unfit for humans to work in, the unsanitary living conditions of the animals can cause health risks, repertory problems and nausea (“Industrial vs Family Farms Comparison”). Factory farms are also not a reliable source of a job, as they advance in technology every day. With advancing technology, factory farms are trying to update their farms as much as possible; this means replacing human workers and replacing them with machines to maximize production (“Introduction to Factory Farming”). With these machines replacing the workers, factory farms are also becoming more and more independent on fossil fuels to power them (“Introduction to Factory Farms”).
