1) Food plays a major role in triggering many diseases and health conditions in every individual regardless of age. In order to reach a long healthy life, one must realize that eating habits now and in the past will greatly impact long-term health status in the future; therefore it is essential to accommodate healthy eating patterns into the day to day life. One of the primary preventions for widespread conditions like hypertension, diabetes, obesity and cancer is having a balanced “age-defying” diet. In today’s “microwave” fast-paced society, a well balanced diet might pose a challenge as it is considered to be time-consuming, expensive, and impractical. For example, iron overload increases free radical production, damaging DNA and oxidizing LDL cholesterol; therefore, is it important to consume recommended dietary amounts of iron and other minerals and vitamins but not in excess (1,2).
Reducing glucose, triglycerides and insulin levels by limiting the carbohydrate intake, in addition to providing proper protein and foods high in fat has an effect on improving age related factors (3). Although, this type of diet does not intend to cause weight loss, the restrictive nature in calories and carbohydrates consumed reduce leptin, glucose and weight (3). Fiber intake can also have a significant effect on improving heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Fiber enhances the passage of food in the body, regulates blood glucose and controls cholesterol and triglycerides levels. Fiber is prevalent in whole grain products, legumes, vegetables, oats and barley(4).
Furthermore, as we age there are many changes that naturally take place in body composition. With time the body tends to deteriorate as metabolism slows down, lean muscle mass decreases, and body fat and bone loss increases. As these changes slowly occur, individuals tend to decrease energy expenditure activities and eat energy dense foods aggravating their situation, inevitably resulting in weight gain and development of fragile bones.
