At one time, if you were a pregnant and unmarried teen, you were basically shunned and labeled as a tramp. Today, it has become more socially acceptable, and possibly a trend. I have heard about girls making a pregnancy pact as some sort of game. Do these girls realize that becoming a mother is a permanent decision, and you cannot change your mind? I believe that a lot of these girls are looking for attention. An expectant mother tends to be doted on, regardless of her age. They fantasize about a baby shower, gifts, and a cute little baby. They do not realize the amount of time, love, energy, and money that it takes to raise a child. Many times, her education takes a backseat to parenthood. Most teen moms rely on some sort of government assistance. Those who do not, usually work a minimum wage job and have to figure out how to pay for a child’s necessities, rent, utilities, and childcare. I found myself partying and in a relationship with someone that I would not normally date. A positive pregnancy test sealed my fate. I would no longer be able to attend college like I had planned. Being a teenager and a mom would prove to be the most difficult thing I have done in my life. Having a baby changes everything, and having one when you are basically still a child makes for a very difficult life for you and your child. I moved back home with my mother and found myself on government assistance. After my beautiful son was born, I decided to get married. I thought it was the right thing to do. I married someone who was very simple-minded, immature, and did not like to work. I worked two jobs, while he slept all day and his mother watched our son. A couple years later, I discovered I was pregnant again. I gave birth to my second son and began attending school. My ex-husband became extremely verbally and emotionally abusive and would tell me how fat and ugly I was. He told me I was a bad mom, and that no man would ever love me because I had two kids. When my second son was three months old, I left the relationship and never looked back. Once again, I moved back in with my mom. A few months later, I got my own apartment. I struggled financially, making minimum wage. I could not afford my bills, and received no financial assistance from my estranged husband. I could barely keep food on the table and life was extremely hard as a single 22 year old mom with a three year old and a baby. Fortunately, I met Jason later at work, and we instantly fell in love. He accepted the fact that I had children from a previous relationship, and loved them. We had a daughter together and got married. He made it possible for me to be a stay-at-home mother for many years, and then we had our son. Although it is 16 years later than I originally planned, I am now enrolled
