The Process of Writing: Becoming a Writer Essay

There are various ways writers can evaluate their techniques applied in writing. The genre of writing about writing can be approached in various ways – from a process paper to sharing personal experience. The elements that go into this specific genre include answers to the five most important questions who, what, where, and why they write. Anne Lamott, Junot Diaz, Kent Haruf, and Susan Sontag discuss these ideas in their individual investigations. These authors create different experiences for the reader, but these same themes emerge: fears of failing, personal feelings toward writing, and most importantly personal insight on the importance of writing and what works and does not work in their writing procedures. I feel my fear of failure start to kick in at the beginning of my writing process similarly to Lamott. I never know where to begin, and I always seem to think there is going to be a point in my life where I cannot put anything of worth into my paper and always want to give up when I begin. Junot Diaz, on the other hand, felt this fear after about seventy-five pages. He knew where to start, but then he reached a point of no return where he did not know where to go. At least he started unlike Lamott, but without an ending he had barely finished a fraction more of writing than Lamott. Starting with a grand idea often happens to writers, but if they cannot imagine the ending they are left with a just a fraction of a book. In contrast, Susan Sontag had a unique fear of writing. When diagnosed with cancer for the second time she stopped writing. Not because she was forced to, but because she was not able to read, reread, and rewrite by herself, nor could she remember the ending she had planned for her story. She was facing the fear that she would not finish her novel, “My despair and fear that now I’d never finish it” (316). Writers frequently face the fear of not finishing their story –look at Diaz – but not many face the fear because of an uncontrollable life factor. Due to the circumstances Sontag faced she feared she would die before completing her novel. Each of these three writers faced fears of failing and
