With the occurrence of globalization, the methods and contents of modern education seems look like the same in the world no matter developed countries or developing countries. Also the debates about whether modern education is advantaged appears at the same time. Based on the schools in Ladakh (the north of Indian Himalayas), Carol Black’s “Schooling the World: The White Man’s Last Burden (2010)” mainly focuses on the consideration of modern education from several different aspects: modern education loses the aspect of inner spiritual teachings and it does not teach the survival skills; modern schools like factories and students are the products; and the important role of “grade” in student’s heart causes mental illness. Also in the documentary, they mentioned as for survival skills, the people who never go to schools have more knowledge than those students, they know how to build a house, grow food, raise cattle, etc(00:28:46-00:29:08). But students today learn more about the computer those modern techniques. I agree that today schooling is more material and also the spiritual teaching does not play an extreme vital role as before. Because in the old days, agriculture is important than economy and the interactions between countries and cultures are not so close. Cubberty’s opinion about education: “Our schools are, in a sense, factories, in which the raw materials---children are to be shaped and fashioned into products(00:20:09-00:20:15).” In this documentary, Reverend Elijah Gergen, the principal of Moravian Mission School, mentions that some parents and schools force children go to schools, actually children really do not like to go(00:08:26). However, I have a different viewpoint. It is necessary to learn general knowledge and try everything before students choose a specific aspect. Otherwise, they will not know what they really like or not. And also when students learn the knowledge, they are not just learning what shows on textbooks, they learn the skills during the process of study.
