When entering this English 101 course, I did not know what to expect. I knew the course was going to be a lot of writing and work, but I would be able to get through it. A nervousness did fall over me while I started my first writing assignment. I knew I had a lot of improvement to do when it came to writing essays. I soon realized that college essays were nowhere near what someone would find in a high school setting. I soon came to the realization that I had very many issues throughout my writing. For example, grammar was a huge problem throughout my text. I remember getting told by my professor that I needed to work on this matter. I also had fallen into becoming a procrastinator my second semester of college. Pushing my homework and assignments off was one of the biggest mistakes I have made throughout my first year of college. Once I started this course, I was still in the horrible habit of pushing my responsibilities off, but after my first essay was completed, I soon realized that my professor was not going to tolerate. The way the class went was, either you do the assignments or you do not get a grade at all. …show more content…

Which was surprising because, I have been using MLA format since my freshman year of high school, but I guess you learn something new every day. Another point I was not pleased with throughout my grade book was not indicating the focus of my essays clear enough and elaborating on my thoughts. These two problems have been a major cause for my essays to fall short of what I was hoping. It is ironic going back and looking at the rubric for my “This I Believe” essay and seeing that I did not clearly state what my belief was, which was one of the most crucial parts of my

“Spanglish” English such a complex language something spoken by many, and yet many others yearn to learn it. That was me a young and fragile girl who yearned to understand a foreign language, a language that other kids spoke. Although I was born in the United States I was not born speaking the native language – English. As early as I can remember, Spanish was what I spoke, heard, and understood.…

When I was in elementary and middle school I didn't really have a subject preference. I was just okay at every subject and I couldn't find myself interested in anything particular. I didn't feel lost because I had plenty of time to decide what I wanted for myself that would make me happy. After a certain point in my life though, I have always had a preference for English, a preference that I didn't act on until recently.…

As stated in the assignment description, literacy is entirely acquired in context. As I’ve known how to read since my early developmental years, it wasn’t that I was able to read something into much later on. Reading a novel is different from reading an article on a newspaper or online as reading a screenplay is different from reading a poem. When I first started college two years ago, I acquired an entirely new literacy of a digital artifact in a digital media class. In the class, a core project was the development of a professional personal website.…

Twelve weeks later, my first college writing course completed, and to my pleasant almost surprise, I feel as though I have bettered myself in writing. If you look back at my Mid-term Reflection, walking into my first undergraduate writing class was a little unsettling. Was I going to be totally on top of everything the professor threw at us students or was I going to be completely unprepared? Rhetoric and Composition 103 was neither one nor the other, but a writing class that took what I knew and what I did not to create a well-rounded writer. By the time Mid-term’s rolled around, I could already see a change in my skills as a writer.…

The prompt of the essay was given a day before we wrote it in class and we had a class period to plan. During class, I was able to write a thesis and gather many quotes and ideas. Yet, my paragraphs were inadequate because they had little analysis, leading to a weak response. Like the Summer Reading Essay, I struggled with time management since I took most of my time writing the essay and was left with barely any time to edit. Furthermore, I think that the quality of the essay is poor because of the lack of organization and analysis.…

After my completion of AP English junior year, I felt better than ever about my writing. Although it is okay to be confident in your skills, I entered this year with a sense of satisfaction and no desire to take my writing abilities to the next level. Due to this lack of ambition, I haphazardly threw my first week essay together and genuinely thought my teacher would be in awe over my skills- as I was only a senior entering a college course. When I received my grade, I was shocked to see that I had been placed into the scoring category of “weak”, and my teacher ultimately wasn’t so pleased after all. After some reflection, I reached the conclusion that my teacher was right- I deserved that five out of twenty.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…
