This could be due to feeling responsible for another person or because the other person reminds the spouse to take care of himself/herself. This advantage is likely to be explained by other research suggesting that married couples tend to eat healthier diets, smoke and drink less, and seek medical help earlier when faced with a problem. Men and women who are married have lower rates of substance abuse and alcohol consumption than unmarried couples. They also tend to help motivate each other to eat healthy and stay active doing various activities such as tennis or taking a walk …show more content…
Unhealthy marriages have negative consequences. For example, people in unhealthy marriages have more severe depression, which can be a great source of stress. Married people are less likely to get pneumonia, have surgery, develop cancer or have heart attack, while yet another study finds that a stressful marriage can be as bad for the heart as a regular smoking habit (Gupta 1). The risk of heart disease can actually go up if a couple is in a bad marriage or experiencing other close relationships marked by negativity. “Several new studies, for instance, show that marriage advantage doesn’t extend to those in troubled relationship, which can leave a person far less healthy than if she/ he had never married at all.” (Parker) Finding ways to improve a bad marriage might help one’s mental and physical well-being.
Is marriage good for your health? Sure, as long as it is a good marriage. Based on many researches, married couples have a greater life expectancy than single people.
