This habit is quite old and existed even during the Greek archaic period: for exemple the Orientalizing style that from the VIII and VII century BC notable in Corinthian Greek poetry was a direct influence by Middle-Eastern art and style at the time (Cook, R.M., Dupont, P. 1998. East Greek Pottery. London: Routledge.). The “creativity” of this art movement was just the reinterpretation of other art styles.…

In 1657, Johannes Vermeer painted “The Milkmaid”. It is an oil on canvas painting and it on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Vermeer was a Dutch painter who liked to get his ideas from middle class life. He used a lot of monochrome shades of grey, browns, greys, and then he would apply primary colors, reds, blues, and yellows on top, to form a transparent looking painting. He used expensive pigments to illustrate the lighting in the painting, which then helped reflect the many colors he used for the background of each painting.…

In the painting, Christ is illuminated by being colored in with very pale colors, but he surrounded by a myriad of colors. Each person depicted in the painting, especially those in the foreground, are each wearing clothes that have different hues, such as the Virgin is wearing blue while the Saint John is wearing red. The colors of each of their clothing are quite intense adding to the energy of the scene. There is also a mix of warm and cool tones throughout the painting, which adds the disorder of the painting. Another important aspect of the painting is the use of color in the middle ground and background.…

Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael both formed the iconic dyad of the epitome of Renaissance art. In Leonardo da Vinci’s Madonna of the Rocks as well as Raphael’s rendition of da Vinci’s painting Madonna in the Meadow, a religious scene is depicted with Madonna gazes towards an exchange between Saint John and Jesus Christ in infantry as she realizes the grave future that Christ faces. While both paintings feature the same biblical figures in similar fashion, Raphael’s rendering takes on a brighter and lighter tonality and clearer disposition unlike Da Vinci’s more sullen, hazy, and darker painting. Nonetheless, both paintings portray an air of spirituality.…
