Now, imagine he or she having a dream about a dark shadow constantly attacking them and their body being completely paralyzed while trying to run away, then all of a sudden waking up in fear and not knowing where they are. According to WebMD, nightmares are graphically, realistic, terrifying dream that shakes you awake from a deep sleep. They often set your heart pounding from fear. Nightmares tend to occur most often during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, when most dreaming takes place. Because periods of REM sleep become progressively longer as the night progresses, you may find you experience nightmares most often in the early morning hours (Nightmares in Adults, 1). Yes, this may be the most popular cause of nightmare, but have you ever wonder why exactly? In the article, “Nightmare Disorder”, in the one of the subtitles called causes, the author states “Reading scary books or watching scary movies, especially before bed, can be associated with nightmares”( Nightmare Disorder, 3). This quotes describe that if you got to bed reading scary books or watching a terrifying move that it can result in a high chance of nightmares. Not only will reading and watching scary movies give us nightmares it will affect the way we act during the day and night. We will always be on edge and always feels as if we are in the nature of the movie, which could result another cause of nightmares, sleep deprivation. All these causes can results toward one another and typically have the same effect on our body.
Nightmares are no longer just bad dreams, but they have drastically took a tole on our health and well being. Such as those who experience nightmares, are already depressed or have anxiety issues so after have reoccurring nightmares will result into more psychological issues. For example, according to the article, “What are the Effects of Nightmares” the author, Heather Long informs that nightmares have different effects on children and adults.
