November 2, 2016 How Mass Media can Changes a Person’s Outlook, Even in Negative Ways
Media is a large part of day-to-day lives. Defined by webster’s dictionary, mass media is best defined as, a medium of communication (as newspapers, radio, or television) that is designed to reach the mass of the people —usually used in plural. Since the 1940’s, when televisions became a common place in homes across the country, there has been more media violence being shown on television. Not only is media violence exposed in adult television shows and movies, it is also common to see it in children’s television shows and movies. It can be beneficial in many ways like spreading awareness, sharing news, and creating entertainment. However, it can be just as powerfully negative in many ways. Increasingly graphic images are shown daily in the news from current conflicts occurring around the world like Iraq and Afghanistan and also from local news like riots. The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) wrote on this issue, “These images can confuse and frighten children and, similarly to overly violent movies and video games, frequent viewing of news coverage of traumatic events may cause children to become aggressive, desensitized to violence, and have less empathy for others.” This statement is very accurate because most people do not realize how much violence is really shown on the news. Although parents want to educate their children on what is going on in the world and country that they live in, it is important to realize that this knowledge of such violent behavior can negatively affect their children and how they grow up
