50 First Dates Movie Analysis

The disorder I’ve chosen to do is amnesia. The movie I’ve chosen that represents this disorder is 50 First Dates. In this movie Henry Roth (Adam Sandler) is known as a womanizer. While sailing around the island of Oahu his boat breaks down, forcing him to stop by a local café. During his brief stint at this café he sees a woman that is beautiful beyond belief. So much so that he feels the need to come back to the café the next day to see if she’ll be there again. While on his second trip to the café he gets the courage to speak to this woman whose name turns out to be Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore). During this trip he and Lucy hit it off instantly, building waffle castles and making fun of people together. After their mini date together she asks him to meet her again, same place and same time. The next day Henry goes to the café where Lucy, to his surprised, has no recollection of ever meeting him. During this time the café owner pulls him to the back and explains to him that a year ago Lucy got into a bad car accident that left her with Goldfields syndrome or anterograde amnesia. The memory can either be partially lost or fully lost depending on the extent of the damage that was done. There are two main types of amnesia. Retrograde amnesia and anterograde amnesia. In the case of Lucy she suffered from anterograde amnesia. Retrograde amnesia is the inability to retrieve information that was taken in before a particular date, most of the time the date of the accident or operation. Anterograde is the inability to transfer memory from the short term to the long term. People with this cannot remember things for long periods of time.
