Upon arriving to the United States, many of the Swedish immigrants not only remained Lutheran, but they kept their “diasporic nationalism” (Tweed 110-111). Although they moved to a new country, they still considered themselves as Swedish. The push for their immigration was centered on having a better life economically and have freedoms that they did not have in their homelands. The move was never to forget about where they came from. For those purposes, they kept their diasporic nationalism. The first wave of Swedish immigrants to the United States were transnational migrants. They lived across international borders from Sweden to the United States. They still remained in contact with their families that lived back in their homelands. One …show more content…
Tweed discussed how the different religions began to flow together once they met and created new spiritual streams (60). This is how the Christian denominations like Methodist, Episcopalians, Baptist, and etc. were formed. They are all forms of Christianity, but the movement, crossing and dwelling of the Swedes created a hybrid society with the Americans. Both sides influenced each other creating mixtures from each of their original beliefs. By the time the second wave of Swedes immigrated to America by the twentieth century, the first wave of Swedes brought their families with them to live for good. This second generation of Swedes and third considered themselves as Americans after adapting and assimilating in the “melting pot.” With all the Swedes in America, they began mixing with the Americans and creating offspring. The term ethnoscapes (297) applies to Swedish immigration to the United States. An ethnoscape is the movement of people from one culture and border across another. In this case, ethnoscapes are associated with the Swedes immigrating to America. The movement across international borders. Technoscapes are cultural interactions through technology (297). During the twentieth century the internet was invented and this was the peak of Swedish immigration in the United States. The second generational immigrants were able to communicate through technology in order to influence the next generation of Swedes to immigrate to America. Finanscapes are the flux of capital across borders (298). It cost to move across space and international borders. Ethnoscapes, technoscapes. And finanscapes go hand in hand. An example would be mail ordered brides. This is when women put themselves online or in some form of the media. Then she is selected by a man who then marry her and sends for her to come to America.
