Shrouded in mystery, currently the Mona Lisa is held in the sanctum of the Louvre in Paris. The Mona Lisa was created by Leonardo Da Vinci during the renaissance period around 1503. One of the components that makes the Mona Lisa so popular is the lack of certainty regarding the details of the portrait. It is not known how long it took the portrait to be completed, exactly when the portrait was completed, or the circumstances the surrounded the creation of the painting. The Mona Lisa, is thought to be a portrait of Lisa Gherardini the spouse of a Florentine cloth merchant named Franceso de Gioconda, which is why the alternative title is La Gioconda. The circumstances that surround the painting are very mysterious. It was either created when Gherardini was married or after the birth of her son after the death of their daughter [Scailliérez]. The distant landscape of the portrait and the sitters positons are theorized to represent and inherent connection of humanity to nature. The shapes and styles displayed throughout the sitter’s body are also displayed throughout the background demonstrated Da Vinci’s enormous talent. On first look, the painting may look very simple, but through deeper examination there are very complex themes throughout the Mona Lisa [Mona]. Through current forensic efforts and analysis of the Mona Lisa paintings, science has been able to reveal more about the Mona Lisa. Using infrared light scientists were able to discover what people could not see using their sight. They were able to find that Leonardo was not as decisive as people may have thought. Instead the analysis revealed that Da Vinci may have originally wanted to paint a sort of bridal gown, christening the birth of Lisa Gheradini’s child. The analysis was also able to reveal some corroborating evidence to prove that the painting may have originally been to celebrate the birth of a child. The infrared light also showed that her hands were originally clenched as if she might have been about to get up and out of the chair [Austen].
