The United States should switch to the metric system or the International System of Units because it’s more efficient and easy to understand. The United States uses a different measuring system which is called customary units. We are one of the three counties; Liberia, and Myanmar that doesn’t use the metric system. The metric system is better to use than any other measuring system. During the 1990’s NASA lost upwards of $125 million worth of equipment because one team used the metric system and the other team didn’t. (Conradt)
The customary units are 12 inches in one foot and three feet in one yard. One mile has 5280 feet or 1760 yards. The metric system is a lot easier to understand. For example, the distance …show more content…
For example boiling point in Fahrenheit is 202 degrees. But in Celsius, it is 100 degrees or 373 Kelvin. The freezing point in Fahrenheit is 32 degrees. In Celsius it’s 0 degrees or 273 Kelvin. Kelvin is usually used for science to measure the temperature of things. The only time Fahrenheit and Celsius will equal each other is about -40 degrees. If you haven’t noticed, for Celsius to equal Kelvin, you just have to add 273 which is easy to remember. But for Fahrenheit to equal Kelvin there is a formula that you need to remember. The formula is to subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature and multiply that number by five and then take that number and divide it by nine. Once you have that number you know the temperature in Celsius. Since the rest of the world doesn’t use the United States measuring system we would have to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit by using the formula …show more content…
Usually the military uses 24 hours to tell time which is sometimes called military time. An example of military time is 17:50, which is 5:50 pm in time everyone understands.
For measuring weight, the metric system is better than the customary units. The units in the U.S are odd. For example is there are 16 ounces in one pound and 2000 pounds in one ton. Whereas for the metric system there are 1000 grams in 1 kilogram. For the conversion between these units are 2.2 pounds in one kilogram and there are about .035 ounces in one gram. When things are imported to the U.S, they’re weighed in kilograms so it needs to be converted into pounds.
The customary units are different when it comes to the volume of objects. For the system the United States uses, there are so many different measurements, such as tablespoons, fluid ounce, cups, pint, quarter, and gallons. Whereas the metric system uses liters and milliliters. It could get confusing when trying to remember all the conversions from tablespoons to cups and cups to gallons. The cooks would have to remember that one liter is about one quart. Half a liter is about one pint and one fourth of a liter is about one cup. In one liter of water are 1000 milliliters. One liter is about .27 gallons and one milliliter is about .068 table spoons. Using this system is better because there are not any fractions, only decimals which
