The Catbird Seat Essay
James Thurber’s short story, The Catbird Seat, features Mr. Martin musing the murder of Mrs. Barrows. The brooding Martin is determined to “rub out” the crass, Mrs. Barrows, who harasses Mr. Martin , with excessive radio baseball announcer, Red Barber quotes. Not only is she obnoxious, she is planning, with the permission of President Fitweiler, to reorganize Mr. Martin’s filing system at F&S. Thurber’s, The Catbird Seat, speaks to a malicious unethical work environment and persuades the reader to empathize with the seemingly, outward stable appearance of Mr. Martin that fictitiously justifies Mr. Erwin Martin’s inner thoughts and dehumanize the powerful, vulgar, Mrs. Ulgine Barrows, in this light, is evident, that humanity …show more content…
Martin, had the gift of overhearing private conversations and had no qualms in passing along the information to co-workers. Dr. Fitch is Mr. Fitweiler 's psychiatrist, who apparently is accessible to Mr. Fitweiler to discuss employees on the phone, however he did not claim to diagnose Mrs. Barrows.
Plot
Mrs. Barrows met Mr. Fitweiler at a party. According to Mrs. she rescued him from the, “embraces of a powerfully built drunken man” who thought Mr. Fitweiler was a famous football coach. Mrs. Barrows had lead Mr. Fitweiler to the sofa working on him with her “monstrous magic” and Mr. Fitweiler simply concluded that Mrs. Barrows would be a remarkable addition to F&S (Thurber,1945, para. 5). Mr Fitweiler hired Mrs Barrows a week later as his special advisor. Mrs. Barrows immediately begin to work on tearing up the office or “pea patch”
Setting Thurber’s story is born in the office of F&S, a company that Mr. Fitweiler run efficiently. Mr. Martin is a steadfast worker who produces good work, with the willingness to correct, or erase his mistakes, and Mr. Fitweiler’s mistake of hiring Mrs. Barrows is how he plans to “rub out” Mrs.
