Essay 3 Saint Patrick also known as the patron saint of Ireland, is today one of the world 's most popular saints (Catholic Online). He is celebrated every year on March 17th, the anniversary of his death. However the reasons his life is celebrated have greatly changed since the first Saint Patrick 's Day was established by the Church in 1631 (Ashley Ross). He was originally revered for bringing catholicism to Ireland, but today his missionary work is widely forgotten and he has instead become the symbol of Irish pride. Whether it be due to the luck of the Irish or being in the right place at the right time, Saint Patrick, at least his name rather than his legacy, is long from being buried in the depths of history.

This is what Patrick became known for was converting the pagan people of Ireland into christians, also more commonly known as the metaphor of him chasing the snakes out of Ireland. While converting Ireland, Patrick also shaped some major aspects of Irish culture that is still alive and thriving today. One aspect that can still be seen in churches throughout Ireland and beyond is the Irish Cross, this is a mixture of a traditional latin cross and a pagan sun worshiping symbol. The mixture of the two helped the pagans understand the importance of the cross since it was combined with something they were familiar with. Another symbol that is widely attributed to Saint Patrick is the three leaf clover, he used the clover which grows abundantly in Ireland to explain the holy trinity, but today the three leaf clover is widely associated with Ireland and especially Saint Patrick 's Day. Although there are so many things that Saint Patrick is responsible for it seems as though in todays society he is just known as the man behind Saint Patrick 's Day. First celebrated in Ireland in 1631 when the church established it as a holiday, Saint Patrick’s Day was originally a quite day used for church and feasting. That was until 19th century, at a time when the “Irish Famine of 1845-1850” (Mailto Href) was sending hundred of thousands of people to emigrate to the United States to escape death by starvation and disease. These Irish immigrants that were arriving in

St Agnes was tortured for being a Christian in her time, it was against the law to follow Christianity. Although in Australia I can not go through what St Agnes did for being a Christian, many people around the world are still tortured, placed in jail and even murdered for simply being a Christian. A way that I can help is by writing a letter to the united nations raising awareness of the lack of freedom of religion around the world. I would ask them to work hard in the 6 countries that the American government marked as “countries of particular concern” for religious freedom violations. These countries include Iran, Burma, China, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan.…

In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue looking for new land to settle upon. He stumbled upon the North Americas which was then and still is the most influential discovery of all time. His finding has led to life as we know it today. Even though Columbus was the hero who discovered the new world he is also deemed as a sinister immoral figure that brought plague to North America, and also launched the later global practice of slavery. I believe that Christopher Columbus is deserving of his Holiday because without his actions even though sometimes harsh we wouldn’t have this great Nation.…

Christopher Columbus was a famous Italian navigator who opened up the way to the Americas. He did not discover America, although we assume him as a hero, being that without him, we may have not known that America existed. Personally, I don’t believe he should be celebrated, since he is the cause of slavery of Native Americans. If it weren’t for Christopher Columbus, there would have not been slavery in America at all. Three ways he can be considered a villain, owing to the procedure with Native Americans which was punishments forcing various slaves to Catholicism, and he transmitted numerous diseases.…

Columbus Day is an American holiday celebrated on October 12 (may be observed at different times), the day which Christopher Columbus set sail to discover the Americas, in 1492. He set forth the future of what would become known as the Caribbeans, South America, Hispaniola and others. However, he never reached North America, which is a know fact that Americans today continue to mistake it for. Either way, it is still honored for his discoveries and essentially marking history. Today, people seem to argue whether Columbus was truly a hero or a man who killed native tribes of Indians and took everything they had for personal gain.…
