    1. Taking the results of this study into consideration, what would you, as a health professional, tell a patient that asks if they should consider CAM treatments for their breast cancer? As a health professional I will not recommend breast cancer patient to use CAM therapy as a supplemental for systemic treatments because the CAM therapy will not change the events of the breast cancer disease to patient. Also, the CAM therapy will not help patient to become better due to the studies which shows that there weren’t any signs of improvement with breast cancer patients by using CAM therapies.…

Previous to 1998, women with breast cancer were unable to use their health insurance to cover reconstructive procedures after mastectomy. In the late 90’s reconstructive surgeon Dr. Todd Wider and his patient Janet Franquent were two key figures in making a change by starting a crusade to change the law. In 1998 the Women’s Health & Cancer Act passed by Congress. Due to this act being passed many women are now able to have reconstructive procedures performed and covered by their health insurance. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is one of two most common cancers among American women and about 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer.…

Thus far we have learned a great deal about the development and implementation of the evidence based practice (EBP) guidelines, now the next important step would be how to effectively apply the EBP to clinical practice. According to Field and Lohr (1990), "Clinical practice guidelines are systematically developed statements to assist practitioner and patient decisions about appropriate health care for specific clinical circumstances." (p. 38). What I liked most about this statement and would like to place emphasis on is “assist…patient decisions about appropriate health care for clinical circumstances” (p.38). Not only is educating the patient about the most recent data on caring for them is essential but how you deliver the message to the…

I always tell my patients you don’t get to pick if cancer will be a part of your life, but it gets to pick you. Each year, more than 200,000 women in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and nearly 40,000 women are expected to die from the disease. (Komen Foundation) Through education and perseverance from many groups, such as American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, American College of Radiology, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists there has been a decline in the rate of deaths due to breast cancer. Breast cancer is still the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women, exceeded by lung cancer. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists at first had agreed with the US Task Force’s guideline changes in 2009 but by the end of 2011 they saw how the information didn’t add up.…

In this paper I will discuss my findings and also give a patient care situation in which I describe how nursing care or approaches to decision-making may differ based upon the educational preparation of the nurse BSN versus a diploma or ADN degree. Besides the difference in time, credits and money studies are showing a significant difference in ADN nursing versus BSN. “Research has shown that…

The topic that I selected is increasing the evidence based practice use. Evidence based practice (EBP) is one of the popular topics in nursing today. It is defined as a “problem-solving approach to clinical decision making within a healthcare organization that integrates the best available scientific evidence with the best available experiential evidence” (Hain & Kear, 2015, p. 2). Applying evidence based practice into our daily nursing practice can improve the quality of care of the patients.…

The clinical care is a risk as poor literacy skills can misinterpret the patient’s condition and diagnosis. Having poor health literacy has not only affected the person’s involvement in the health care system, but also the decisions they will be making in their home, workplace and community. The levels of literacy impacts patients on performing tasks such as reading dosage levels and instructions of medication packages, or if people seek screening or diagnostic test instructions become hard to understand and from the practitioner instructions become difficult for them to demand upon. This is why medical funding increases for reasons such as interpreters need to be providing to help translate information from the practitioner to the patient. In comparison to those with adequate health literacy emergency room cost ($108; 95% CI: $62 to $154; P <0.0001) to those with inadequate health literacy, with a differences in total being ($1551; 95% CI: −$166 to $3267; P = 0.08).…
