Personal Narrative: My Court Hearing At The Lancaster Court House

Improved Essays
In this following paper I will discuss my court visits on September 30th and October 19th at the Lancaster Court House. The first hearing I saw was an estate hearing in courtroom six on the third floor with Judge Jay J Hoberg. The hearing was only an about an hour long but to me it was very informative. As I mentioned earlier it was an estate hearing for a petition to have will moved to New Jersey, there was a jurisdiction error. There was no defendant, the party in contradiction of a claim that is brought (pg. 262), at the hearing there was only a plaintiff, the party who initiates the claim (pg. 265). I did not know that there could be a trial without a defendant there, this was something that surprised me.

The oldest son was not even mentioned or named in the will at all. The grandson was the sole heir for the will but he was not present during the trial which does not make since either. During this trial I was very confused by these two things.
The second hearing I saw was a sentencing done by Judge Margaret C Miller. The sentencing hiring was only a half an hour but there were many terms used with in that half an hour. There was a defense, the attorney that is trying to prove someone is not guilty of a crime, and a prosecutor, the attorney that has to prove that someone is guilty of a crime, at this sentencing hiring. The judged allowed an oral testimony from the defense to true and prove his innocents. Since, the defendant only committed a minor misdemeanor, a small crime, the judge lowered the sentencing.
Going to court was a very interesting experience, I did not realize how much preparation actually goes into a going to a trial. If you do not understand the terms and phrases that the court is using, you will be very lost. I’m glad that I had the chance to sit and watch a trial and truly understood what was going

I went to go visit Judge Lippitt, she was in her chambers. I went to go ask her some questions, also about a few verdicts. The verdict for the bunion case of the doctor who was being sued for malpractice because the plaintiff claimed he took out too much bone was given to the plaintiff. The plaintiff did get less than they asked for, they wanted 250,000 ended up getting 150,000 plus 15,000 for future surgeries. I think the jury may have given her less because of the lack of demonstration of the impact the surgery results on her life.…

On Thursday, February 18th 2016 I attended multiple court hearings at the Marion County Courthouse in Marion, OH. In this particular court-house there are two common pleas court rooms along with two judges which include Judge Slagle and Judge Finnegan. I felt it necessary to observe both courtrooms of the courthouse to get the most out of this experience. Judge Finnegan’s courtroom was much larger than Judge Slagle’s but seemed to have been more out of date compared to Slagle’s courtroom. In judge Finnegan’s courtroom there was a witness stand directly next to the judge, a table sat vertically on both the left and right side of the room, and individual chairs lined up directly in front of the judge across the room between the two tables.…

My first stop on the hunt for government offices and or buildings in Snyder is the Scurry County Courthouse. I had no problem finding this building due to how it's located in the center of town and all the main roads lead to the "square" where the Courthouse is located. The buildings address is 1806 25th street. Lainey, Ellis and I met at the building so we could take pictures for each other around 5:42 p.m. and there was no one in the parking lot except our own cars, but there was a bit of business due to people getting off work. The Courthouse is surrounded by various boutiques and a business that serves ice cream and coffee.…

It was a usual hot day in Acton, there’s not too much around but, him and me are best friends so we still make this small town fun for us. Both of his parents were always out at work so he was a mature kid for long as I met him, it was just him and that big house. When his parents were home though it didn’t get any better, I saw how it would effect him. I was sixteen when he was twelve, it sounds odd but we never looked at it that way, like I said his mind maturity level was crazy that’s probably how he fit in with most of my friends without them knowing he was still in middle school.…

I headed into the courtroom of Judge Thomas Marcelain to observe my first courtroom trial. The trial involved a 31-year-old man named, Daniel Bohanna, of Pataskala. Mr. Bohanna decided to represent himself in his trial for fear of misrepresentation. He was charged with rape, kidnapping, and felonious assault. I have seen footage on T.V. from famous trials and of course seen reenactments from Hollywood, but I have never been to one in person until now.…

The environment I chose to analyze was the Shiawassee County Circuit Court room. In order to enter the court room, you must push open the heavy wooden doors. Upon entering the court room, I noticed that half of the room was separated into theater style seating. The chairs were made from wood, but also medal support so that the chairs could not be moved, making them a fixed feature. There was a wooden gate also known as the bar separating the publics side from the actual court settings.…

Court Rooms are a place where everything can be changed in the matter of seconds. In my experience, court rooms are always packed with people who have no idea what really happened. In the movie, “And the Band Played On,” the court room they perceived was a lot like one I am familiar with. The room was packed, there was a lot of yelling, and not much of any kind of compromise was made. One of the actors says that the only reason the people were there was for money.…

Learning about the legal environment in the classroom setting can be very interesting and exciting, but seeing a court in action is an entirely new learning experience. During my time spent at the Superior Court of Tolland at Rockville, I had the opportunity to observe multiple components of various court cases. Three cases that specifically stuck out to me were a criminal arraignment, jury selection, and a landlord/tenant dispute. Each of these cases had different elements that allowed me to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the United States legal system. The first case I witnessed was a domestic violence arraignment.…
