Have you ever though what is the relationship of term “literacy” in your life? Within today’s teaching practices literacy has come to be a major part of the course curriculum when teaching early years. It has numerous definitions and meanings to individual people as it continues to be developed through our rapidly changing world. My understanding of literacy “has to do with having the skills and knowledge to create, locate, analyze, comprehend and use a variety of written, visual, aural and multi-model texts for a range of purposes, audiences and contexts.” Literacy is far more than reading and writing, it also involves critical thinking where it tests someone’s understanding of a balanced literacy program which in turn addresses the …show more content…
I have seen them struggling as second language learner, and working hard to learn read and write English. I always felt very sympathy for them. They wanted to learn English, so they can attend their children school events, communicate with different people, get better job, fill out forms, and have better life. The reading and writing skills necessary for this English 109M course is ability to read the article and demonstrate context-appropriate rhetorical choices, connect the ideas with your personal experience, critical thinking, and able to identify the types of writings. My main focus of this assignment is to analyze my own development as a literate individual and my current literacy practice in English 109M course.
Moreover, I learned reading and writing when I was in India, but it was very general type of literacy experience of my life. When I came to United States, I was fifteen years old. I learned that reading and writing is used as communication method, because I had difficulties to communicate with people. Besides, I get to learn the academic literacy in Roseville High School in my sophomore year. I was placed in ELD (English Language Learner) 4. The reading was required daily for fifteen minutes in beginning of the class. I had a journal notebook where I had to write the summary of what I read in class. While reading those books reminded me some of my life experience, and I tried to relate those ideas in my journal writing. The language
