The class has 26 students in which 19 of them are bilingual and most are learning English as a Second Language. I noticed the same reaction as Di Giallonardo had with his students. I would add that some students that I was tutoring would make an error in pronunciation and instead of shying away, they would disregard my corrective feedback and continue to pronounce the words incorrectly. In the research that I conducted, the best way to boost the students self-esteem in pronunciation is with effective communication (CSU, 1993-2016). First, you must choose to work with the problems that significantly hinder communication and let the rest go (CSU, 1993-2016). Some ideas for focusing on specific pronunciation are: voicing, aspiration, mouth position, intonation, linking, vowel length, syllabus, and specific sounds (CSU, …show more content…
As Di Giallonardo was explaining the teaching method I became more and more interested and learned that this method is commonly used in other countries but not so much in America. In America we use several methods, we use 4 types of ESL programs and 2 types of bilingual education programs. The 4 types of ESL programs are: Dual Language Learners, Pull-Out ESL, ESL Class Period, and Sheltered English (McKeon, 1997). The 2 types of bilingual education programs are, One-Way Developmental Bilingual Education and Two-Way Bilingual Education (McKeon, 1997). Each one is unique in their own way in how a student will learn English. Some factors that will determine which method you would be teaching is, ESL population, type of funding from the town/state, and highly qualified educators who preferably are bilingual (McKeon,
