Cities and metropolitan areas are centers of diverse activities, which require efficient and convenient transportation of persons and gods. It is often said that transportation is the lifeblood of cities. High density of activities makes it possible and necessary that high capacity modes, such as bus, light rail and metro, be used because they are more economical, more energy efficient and require much less space than private cars. Moreover, public modes of transportation provide service for all persons, while cars can only be used by those who own and can drive them. In addition, there must be an institutional mechanism to implement the sustainable transportation system. Urban land use and transportation planning is integrated which is why organization of urban land use greatly impacts the sustainability of a transportation system. One of the goals of sustainable transportation is to enhance the public transit system and to reduce the usage of personal vehicles. This is why transit system and usage of personal vehicle are important aspects of sustainable urban transportation system. Safety and security is also essential for a transportation system as accidents have socio-economic impact. Transportation is not only about moving people but it also involves the movement of goods which is why freight transport is another area of sustainable transportation.
