Existentialism and Nihilism are both movements that revolutionized how individuals thought and acted. These types of actions can be seen in the Stranger, a fictional novel by the great French writer Albert Camus. Although the plots and characters are fictional, the same ideas are observed from real life events and movements during the second world war. Throughout the absurd novel that is the Stranger, the different actions the protagonist exhibited reflected his way of expressing the new philosophy of existentialism and nihilism. Some of the action that was display because of the influence of existentialism was when he does things without thinking it through. Most of the time the consequences of the things that he had done are crucial. He give up on finding the meaning in life, he just went along with the flow that coming at him. Even when his mother died, he did not seem to have any feeling toward it. He attended the funeral just because it was his mother. It was not even a shock to him when he heard that his mother passes away, it was more like he waited for it to happen a long time ago. “Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don’t know. I got a telegram from the home: “mother deceased.” (Camus 3). The only person that have given birth to him and has been with him from his childhood, he did not even have any emotion toward the death of his mother. Because of the war, some individual lost faith in tradition and governments. The movement of existentialism was started because of unfulfilled promises that was made by the governments which was giving democracy to people. People started seeking democracy by living in the influences of individuality. That was one of the reason why the society going through the movements of existentialist. Individual started ignoring the rules which was staed “From the Christian side, we are reproached as people who deny the reality and seriousness of human affairs.” (Sartre). This display how other people who were not influenced by the movements view them. Which was denying human affair.
