Henry D. Thoreau’s non-violent protest of not paying his poll tax may not have made a huge impact on society during 1846 when he took his stand for what he believed in, however, his stand would end up becoming a huge inspiration during the 60s and 70s. July of 1846 Henry D. Thoreau was arrested for not paying his poll tax for the last 4 years. (Brooks) Thoreau believed this poll tax helped support the Mexican-American war and the expansion of slavery into the southwest (Brooks); both of which he strongly disagreed with. He wanted to make a public statement of his refusal to support an unjust war and slavery itself and when asked by a friend who visited him in jail as to why he didn’t pay his tax his response was, “The question is not what am I doing in here, but what are you doing out there?” (The Power of…
Osama Bin Laden and Mahatma Gandhi were very different men who led very different lives. These men both had a large impact on the world in such dissimilar ways. Mahatma Gandhi was a pacifist and a supporter of peace and compassion; Osama Bin Laden was an extreme militant and an advocate for war and intolerance. Gandhi was the primary leader in India’s independence movement. He was a small man that had a great heart, and when people saw this they felt the need to follow his aspirations.…
Though Maximilien Robespierre and Mohandas Gandhi had similar goals in their revolutions, and had some similar traits that made them successful, their overall reasons and methods for revolution are entirely opposite. Robespierre’s revolution was spurred on not only his belief that the government was unjust, but also because he wanted governmental power himself. On the other hand, Gandhi wanted no part in government, and simply wanted to better his country. Also, Robespierre called for massive violence in his revolution, whereas Gandhi called for a non-violent revolution. Mohandas Gandhi and Maximilien Robespierre were both excellent speakers, and they both wanted a social reform in their country.…
Ladies and gentleman, as you are all aware, the times we are living in are greatly depressing. We don’t have the money to provide to our wives and children an we are giving up on the things we favoured the most. We are in extreme crisis and President Hoover is leaving it up to us to solve the problem. We are all on our own but I say we shouldn’t wait for our profits to “trickle down” to us. We need government involvement in our economy that will recover our consumer demand, it will reform our depression, and it will relief our economic problems.…

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 15, 2018 The Association of Flight Attendants, United MEC joins the rest of the nation to observe the National Holiday that bears the name, honors the life, and celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King's achievements, in his far too short life of 39 years, lifted up the entire African-American Community by championing their just and noble cause of pursuing their Civil Rights of Equal Justice and Protection under the law. What do the words, “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States” mean to you as an American citizen? Historically speaking, they were the some of the most powerful words uttered in American history. On April 30, 1789, and then again on March 4, 1797, the first president of the United States of America, George Washington, told the nation that “The Constitution is the guide which I never will abandon”. For eight years, President Washington upheld the oath of office and his promise to America to govern the nation in accordance to the Constitution of the United States. Despite being enlisted…
We learn that Washington’s Farewell Address, addressed the importance on isolation. In other words the importance on keeping the U.S. united and far from conflicts that did not concerned the U.S. Apparently, George Washington was fully aware of European history. He had seen how most of the wars in Europe and their colonies started out as a dispute between two powers, but they quickly dragged in their allies into the fight, who had nothing to do with how it started. This was called the Grand Game in European diplomacy, that sought to build interlocking alliances in such a way that would balance out the opposite powers, but often failed, resulting in large casualties and repeated wars.…
Did you know that on March 12, 1930, Gandhi began his 200 mile march to protest the British salt act? The British salt acts prohibited Indians from collecting or selling salt, which was a major problem because salt played an important role in their diet. Along with this Salt Act, citizens were forced to buy vital minerals from the British at a very high price, with heavy taxes added. Civil disobedience is the refusal to comply with certain laws or to pay taxes and fines, as a peaceful form of political protest, and it’s important because it involves resistance against the government without any violence. In the past, the usage of civil disobedience was successfully used by Martin Luther King Jr. as he led The Civil Rights Movements, along with…
My Declaration of Independence I am here today to announce my frustration with the amount of homework given on any day. The problem with all of the homework is that some people have other things to do, and may not have time to complete all of the given homework. I think it’s safe to say that the amount of homework is just a bit too much, and not completing all of it seriously can bring down some grades for people. People do not deserve to have homework in every class, almost every day.…
Gandhi had established concise and persuasive concept of freedom from the utilization of ethos, pathos, logos, and other rhetorical devices fashioning a more solid argument. At first glance, the use of ethos within Gandhi 's letter conveys how properly the letter spoke to the people of India and to the British rule; this is due to his own morals and non-violent tendencies. Gandhi was then able to sway a large majority of Indians to stand with him. Raised by Hindu parents Gandhi was heavily influenced by Jainism. The Jains believe in Ahimsa, which is refraining from non-violent tendencies including physical, mental, or verbal, aggression.…

George Washington can be considered one of the earliest American personalities and celebrities. His victory and success in defeating the British as commander as well as his impact during the various early congressional meetings led to him become the first president of the newly created union. Even though three presidents faced impeachment charges, only one president left office. Richard Nixon, the thirty-seventh president of the United States, a man in the public eye for many years as both a U.S. representative and Senator (“Richard”), was a well-educated and around sixty when he resigned from the position as president. On the evening of August 8, 1974, Nixon delivered his resignation speech over a public broadcast from his Oval Office to the people of the United States. The former president gave his resignation speech to inform the nation of the upcoming changing president; he also voiced his hopes for the country in future affairs, especially the foreign policies Nixon himself set up, as well as his regrets with the Watergate…
In the “Quit India” speech Gandhi uses an arrangement of ethos, pathos, and logos to create deep features in his speech. Through the use of ethos, pathos and logos Gandhi was able to portray himself as a religious, peaceful man throughout his speech. He was able to create ethos through repetition and religious undertones. Gandhi stated at the beginning of his speech, “God has vouchsafed to me a priceless gift in the weapon of Ahisma… God will not forgive me and I shall be judged unworthy of the great gift” (Gandhi, 1). Gandhi used religious connotations to appeal to the common beliefs of the India population.…
