He did attend college but it was one in Minnesota and he dropped after two weeks. He was too ashamed of his job of being a janitor to pay for his tuition. The following summer he worked at Lake Superior fishing for salmon and digging for clams. One day he warned Dan Cody who owned a yacht about an impending storm. Because of that he was very grateful and took in Gatsby as his personal assistant. He traveled with Cody to the Barbary Coast and the West Indies. One of Gatsby’s job as being Cody’s personal assistant was to take care of him when he was in a drunken stupor. This cause Gatsby not to drink. When Cody died he left Gatsby $25,000, but Cody’s mistress prevented it from happening. This inspired Gatsby to dedicate his life to becoming wealthy and a successful man. After telling us his past, Nicks gets on with the story, saying that he hadn 't see Gatsby nor Daisy for several weeks after the reunion of the two. He goes to Gatsby’s house and is surprised to see Tom buchanan there. Tom hand Mr. and Mrs. Sloane were off riding and they had stopped for a drink at his house. Gatsby seems nervous at Tom’s presence and invites him to stay for dinner, but he refuses. But to be polite they invite Gatsby to dine with them, which he accepts but they leave without him. On the following Saturday night Tom and Daisy go to one of Gatsby’s illustrious parties. Tom seems to have no interest in the party but he just wants to keep an eye on Daisy. Nick feels that this party isn 't at favorable as the other party and Daisy even seems to feel the same way. Tom upsets Daisy even more by accusing Gatsby of earning his wealth by bootlegging.
