Having meaningful experiences is what makes us experience human life, and by being same and pleasant restricts that. Both Gary ross’s pleasentvilles and lois lorry’s the giver, demonstrate that both the citizens of the giver and pleasentville are not actually living a happy fulfilled life. whilst both members of both societies are safe, they don’t have experiences that you grow and learn from, and both also explore the idea that we should all treat differences and normal because being different or special makes us human and and individual.

All of the members of the community believe that conformity is necessary, however the Giver and the Receiver believe it eliminates citizen individuality and therefore stopping the community from having meaningful experiences. Similarly, Pleasantville Ross indicates that authority figures can have an enormous amount of influence to and in a community. In the beginning, no laws were enforced on art, sex and music. Ross portrays that the citizens of Pleasantville do not associate themselves with these such “unpleasent” activities was not because they were obeying the rules and regulations, but because they are uneducated about the fact that these activities actually exit.The mayor is an authority figure whose power increases as the citizens gain more freedom, as he needs to maintain order and “sameness”. however when Bud's father notices his wife is not at home making dinner, he fears the change or difference in the routine. In the film, the camera angle is positioned so that crowd looks up to the mayor, this clearly demonstrates that he is the one that holds great power. By member of higher authority setting rules and laws the citizens must abide by them therefore meaning it limits the citizens from experiencing a happy and fulfilled
