All of the members of the community believe that conformity is necessary, however the Giver and the Receiver believe it eliminates citizen individuality and therefore stopping the community from having meaningful experiences. Similarly, Pleasantville Ross indicates that authority figures can have an enormous amount of influence to and in a community. In the beginning, no laws were enforced on art, sex and music. Ross portrays that the citizens of Pleasantville do not associate themselves with these such “unpleasent” activities was not because they were obeying the rules and regulations, but because they are uneducated about the fact that these activities actually exit. The mayor is an authority figure whose power increases as the citizens gain more freedom, as he needs to maintain order and “sameness”. however when Bud's father notices his wife is not at home making dinner, he fears the change or difference in the routine. In the film, the camera angle is positioned so that crowd looks up to the mayor, this clearly demonstrates that he is the one that holds great power. By member of higher authority setting rules and laws the citizens must abide by them therefore meaning it limits the citizens from experiencing a happy and fulfilled

There are many things that can contribute to the quality of life, for example, love, knowledge, hatred, war, family, and anything else that can alter the experience or values of life. In the film The Giver there seemed to be a low value placed on human life because of sameness. Everyone was doing the same thing everyday.…

As viewers watch Pleasantville, they may find themselves feeling sad and uneasy at the interruption and corruption of this seemingly perfect world. To me this movie can be seen as having similarities to the novel Brave New World. In Brave New World books are banned because they create knowledge and individuality begins to arise through one’s thoughts and imagination. In ‘Pleasantville’ the uncolored citizens burn all the books because they do not understand. In both novel and movie the people are afraid of change.…

The pair enjoyed, “ laughing, laughing aloud, laughing as if there was no power left in us to save laughter.”(70) Humans crave joy, such as a babies laugh, children playing, or a sweet song. The Giver was ready to make a plan for change because he knew that jonas was a strong and brave character and could handle anything that came to him. The Giver had noticed that Jonas had been able to see color and had not noticed before and that could be a way why The Giver had finally wanted to make change because he had known that Jonas was different that the rest of the receivers in the past. The society in the popular utopian/dystopian book, The Giver, may seem the better alternative of our modern day society, the dream land that everyone wishes we could achieve, but when we compare how each society functions, maybe this so called ¨perfect world¨ isn't as perfect as we would have hoped it to be. Modern day society and The Giver have may have some similarities, but when the two societies are compared to rules, family, and figurehead/leadership, it seems these two societies are worlds apart.
