Personal Narrative: The Countdown To Christmas

The countdown to Christmas has begun. Twenty-five days turn to thirteen and before you know it, we were down to one. Christmas Eve was here and the Crump sisters rushed off to bed to await Santa 's arrival. In a flash, midnight had struck and little did I know this was going be one of the most important days of my life. I rose from my bed early that Christmas morning and dashed into the living room to see what I had gotten from Santa. My stocking was full of stuff such as toothbrushes, gum, lotions, candies, and other little knick knacks. I tossed my stocking aside because it didn’t appear to catch my eye as much as the next thing. Laying on the floor was a Wii gaming system for the 3 of us to share. We prided ourselves in the new system as now we were “one of the cool kids”. The shiny gold wrapping paper my parents used to wrap their gifts glistened from the lights of the green, old artificial Christmas tree. Once my parents decided they were ready to get up, we got right to business opening the glorious gifts beneath the tree. I asked for a pair of roller skates much like the navy blue Sketcher quad skates (That 's the skates with the two wheels in the front and two in the back) my parents’ had …show more content…
Lotions, nail polishes, and candy laying it all out on the couch. Finally, I pulled out the toothbrush and tears began to stream down my face. Every year on December 25, families come together to celebrate the birth of Jesus and I knew that, however, the true meaning of Christmas slipped my mind. I got caught up with the material things in life and lost the true meaning of Christmas. The World doesn’t revolve around me. I’m just a speck. Without my family around me, I’d be lost. The toothbrush may have been the simplest thing I could have received, but it 's not about the item. My parents gave up so much for me just to have that simple

I miss them already. Despite the freezing cold snow and the nipping air, we had a lovely Christmas break. As I inspect my child, now grown with children of her own, holding tickets back to their home, longing envelopes me. Hoards of people push past, unaware of my pain, on their own schedules and heading toward different trains, talking and texting on their cell phones. My family boards, time as if in slow-motion, and waves goodbye until I see them again.…

Throughout my life I have always been a daddy’s girl. I would beg my dad to take me hunting, fishing, golfing, to work, and just about anywhere my dad went I wanted to go. We had a close bond until he was diagnosed with stage 3 liver and colon cancer during my senior year of high school. I was devastated by the news since the doctors had given my father about 6 months to live. To top it off, it was the first year I was able to attend a Mardi Gras ball and that year I was supposed to walk my dad out since he was a masker who rode in the organization’s parade.…

The only thing that was life changing is that my dad changed jobs from working in Iowa city and being gone all the time, to switching jobs in Clarence so I’d see him more. When I was littler, me and my brothers would get up super early Christmas morning so that we could hopefully open all the presents that were underneath the tree. We would separate the presents and try to figure out what was inside each one, while we waited for our parents to get up.…

The Sunday after Thanksgiving, I rather spontaneously---or perhaps, I’d like to think, by the work of the Holy Spirit---got on a night bus and went to church. I arrived at St. Mark’s Cathedral to a contemplative Eucharist in their beautiful chapel. It was soft and lovely and quiet. I love the quiet. I sought it out when I came to college in Seattle, living in “the big city” for the first time this fall, more than a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of people everywhere.…

With the epiphany, the narrator discovers his life-changing revelation that leaves the greatest impact on his life when he becomes aware that this may be his father 's final Christmas with them. What's Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older, but not an hour richer; a time for balancing your books and having every item in 'em through a round dozen of months presented dead against you? If I could work my will," said Scrooge indignantly, "every idiot who goes about with 'Merry Christmas' on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!" (page 4, stave one). This shows how Scrooge talks about Christmas traditions and the joy it places in people, and how he has reverted it so that he can express his own feelings toward this holiday.…
