Countertransference is the reactions and responses based on the counselor’s personal issues and previous experiences that the counselor has towards the clients. Countertransference may not be completely negative in all therapy but when it is negative is when the counselor projects onto the client his or her won unresolved feelings or issues that may come up as a result of treating a client. Countertransference happens when the counselor loses objectivity and becomes angry or overwhelmed when hearing a client’s story. In Love’s executioner, countertransference I believe can be evident in a couple of the case studies. But in the same case study mentioned above, “Fat Lady” Yalom discusses countertransference. Dr Yalom explains at the beginning of the case study how much he is disgusted by fat women, stating hat he has always been repelled by fat women. He explains that he has always admired a woman’s body. And he also explains that he grew up in a racially segregated Washington, D.C and was the only son of the only white family in a black neighborhood. He describes how growing up he would be attacked for his whiteness around the neighborhood and in school, he would be attacked for being Jewish. And maybe, he needed o hate someone too and perhaps that’s where he learned to dislike fat women. In “The wrong one died” I think that Penny was selfish. I can’t imagine how hard its to lose a child first of all because I don’t have any so I can’t relate as much but, I do know she has two other children whom she cares for (the other two were given in adoption) and she concentrated all of her energy, her mind and heart to one thing: the loss of her daughter. I think that my feelings towards Penny can be both good and bad depending on how well I am able to manage these. The other client that I evoked some reactions from me would be Carlos in “If rape were legal”. As a woman I don’t know how I would personally react to this. This comment would offend me and I feel as though I would have encountered way too many emotions to be objective in session with Carlos. These feelings would be harmful to the relationship with Carlos because I would loose my concentration in helping Carlos and would instead be concentrated in my feelings towards his
