Art is defined as “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power” ("Oxford Dictionary"). It is also used to describe “the various branches of creative activity, such as music, literature, and dance” (Oxford Dictionary”). Over the course of time, it has been used to express cultural differences, socioeconomic views, religious themes, and even political ideals. Art has been in existence, in one form or another, for thousands of years. No matter what the time period, art is the expression of society and is reflective of the events that occur in that period. We can better understand the social life, political trends, and religious beliefs of those people living in that day (Text). Besides the effects that are imposed by the dominant social class for the particular time period, previous generations of art can leave their mark on each successive time period as well (Text). The great artists of the past influence the work of future artists. Intentionally or not, every artist draws inspiration from previous artist. Just as each style of art has it’s own unique characteristics, each artist has his or her own personality and identity, yet they all seem to have certain commonalities. For most artists, art is at the core of their lives. Art is an extension of them. They spend the majority of their life thinking about art. They are resilient and understand that success is not an overnight occurrence and that it involves many years of hard work. Over the years I have heard of many artist and composers but I will admit that I had never taken the time to learn very much about them. I could normally tell the difference between the paintings of artist such as Picasso, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Monet, but my knowledge of art stopped at that point. It was through the research for this paper that I began to understand the different styles of art and the different time periods associated with each one. There were two particular periods that stood out to me the most. I especially enjoyed learning more about
