Social networking is a service that one can use to create social relationships, create interests, share backgrounds and make connections. Sites like Twitter or Facebook grant consumers access to just about anyone, from a stranger in a bar who slipped you their name, to the boy named Adam who played on your baseball team fifteen years ago. Glancing through social network sites make most people feel connected to an enormous circle, but such effortless, informal connections have its drawbacks.

Social networking sites give users an illusion of bringing closeness and happiness, but in a large sense it is creating mass isolation. As consumers spend more quantities of time on social networking sites, they gain far less face to face interaction. Social media isolation has a devastating effect. In 2000, political scientist Robert D. Putnam released the book "Bowling Alone," this evaluated social media isolation. He determined that isolation can lead to a host of mental issues including, psychological, emotional and physical problems including depression, anxiety, somatic complaints and many others. In fact, a University of Illinois at Chicago School of Medicine study showed social isolation impaired brain hormones, which is the likely reason socially isolated people experience tremendous levels of stress, aggression, anxiety and other mental issues. No user joins a social network site to feel sad and lonely. But another study from the University of Michigan psychologist Ethan Kross argues that that’s exactly how it makes users feel. The research against social media sites and their negative effect are enormous. It is not an opinion anymore, but rather a fact that social media sites are causing users extreme unhappiness and feelings of loneliness causing
