“When Unoka died he had taken no title at all and he was heavily in debt. Any wonder then that his son Okonkwo was ashamed of him? Fortunately, among these people a man was judged according to his worth and not according to the worth of his father. Okonkwo was clearly cut out for great things” (8). Okonkwo was definitely ashamed of his dad for taking no titles whereas Okonkwo had taken two titles and has 3 wives. Okonkwo made it very clear how much he was ashamed of his dad.
B. Okonkwo became exactly like his father.
1. “They then came to the tree from which Okonkwo’s body was dangling, and they stopped dead”, (207). Okonkwo had given up his hope and became exactly like his father by committing suicide which is a dishonorable death. Okonkwo never wanted it to end like that but he thought he had no other choice. He could not run away because that was also dishonorable. Either way he would have died a dishonorable death like his dad.
2. “Okonkwo’s second wife had merely cut a few leaves off it to wrap some food, and she said so. Without further argument Okonkwo gave her a sound beating and left her and her only daughter weeping” (38). Okonkwo beat his wife and was very cruel to the rest of his family. Unoka had beat his family a lot just like Okonkwo did. Okonkwo had killed one of his son’s, Ikemefuna and beat his other son for joining the Christian church. They both did stupid things to their families for stupid
