It was 2 a.m. when I surprisingly awoke from my sleep as my phone rang. A close friend called me to check my social media app on the latest celebrity drama on a popular blog spot called “The Shade Room”. But what was more intriguing to me wasn’t the news I was reading right in front of me but the impact that social media and just technology as a whole had on me.

Imagine waking up one day and all newspapers, books, and anything print related has vanished? Could we blame this on internet alone? Of course not. We as people grow and evolve and so does everything else in life before it reaches its ending of a new era. Now, people use and have their phones, tablets, and computers at hand almost every day. People are now less likely inclined to pick up a magazine or a newspaper because not it’s at the palm of their hand. Personal Connections in the Modern World “I’m So Totally, digitally, Close to You: The Brave New World of Digital Intimacy,” by a former Knight Fellow at MIT, Clive Thompson, follows the path of how technology has made us closer than ever and farthest apart at the same time. Thompson captures the reader’s attention by describing how Mark Zuckerberg changed the way Facebook worked forever. He then describes how adults who were at first skeptical about using social media got into using it on a regular basis, how social media can help you connect with people more, what the Dunbar number is and how it has changed, and how social media is ruining our lives. Thompson’s article is effective because he combines interviews from multiple people about…

We live in an interconnected world with society having a variety of means to communicate and stay connected to one another locally and globally. The article “Head in the (Instagrammed) Clouds,” written by Isabel H. Evans, reminds us that life should not be controlled by technology. To introduce her idea, Evans talks about our necessity to get likes and shares on our posts and comments to make ourselves feel loved and warm. Next, Blackwell explained how we justify spending time plugged in because we either want to avoid doing something we don't like or we are trying to pass the time. Blackwell concludes by stating that we need to refocus our efforts on gaining accomplishments in real life that we can physically touch and see rather than attaining accomplishments through our…

With USA Today debuting in 1982, it has continued to focus on innovative avenues for continued success and growth as the preferred news source. Personally, I am a very visual news consumer; therefore, what I enjoy most about the USA Today newspaper is the visual and eye catching content it has embedded within the paper -- digital and print versions. The vision the stakeholders had prior to the launch of USA Today was to have a unique approach to an audience and provide more news in less time (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014); therefore, this concept would appeal to generations of business people who stay on the move and have minimal time. The paper has done just that! They were able to differentiate themselves in a way that took untraditional approach – such as, colorful graphics, short detailed stories, colorful weather maps, celebrity stories, and unique writing styles (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014).…

For the past two decades, we’ve thought of “new media” as the upstart and “old media” as reliable media. But what if new media isn’t as new as we think it is and maybe old media isn’t the oldest type of media? Though many people believe that we have come such a long way from previous social media outlets, nothing has really changed. Twenty years ago, my mother was calling her friends on landlines and meeting up at the local cafes. Today, I’m calling my friends on my iPhone and meeting up at the local mall.…

Frierson (2012) states, “In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists more career opportunities for communications graduates than any other major, including computer science, engineering and mathematics.” “Communication Studies is a broad discipline that covers rhetorical theory from the ancient Greeks to the latest in digital media.…
