The SS were not always known as the SS. Before they were known for their terror and brutality they were known as part of the “Sturmabteilung” or assault division (SA) in English. The assault division first started in 1921 as Hitler’s personal body guards and they would follow him to all of his public events such as speeches. (History) The SA wore a brown uniform and because of this many people called them brown shirts. In 1925 Hitler ordered a new formation to be made out of the SA, it would be known as the SS. The SS at this point were just a small branch off section.

Heinrich Himmler was born on October 7, 1900 and had graduated high school in 1922. Heinrich joined the Nazis in 1929 and became the leader of the SS in the next six years. (Historyonthenet) In the year 1933 Heinrich opened up the first concentration camp in Dachau and a year later in 1934 he destroyed the paramilitary SA making the SS the most powerful military in Germany. In 1941he told Rudolf Hoess that he had a message for him. Rudolf was a SS Commandant of the infamous concentration camp Auschwitz. He told him that "the Führer had given the order for a Final Solution of the Jewish Question" and that "we, the SS, must carry out that order".
