The Freedman’s Bureau and Reconstruction
The freedman’s bureau had been established on March 3rd 1865 during the civil war and lasted until the early 1870s. It had been passed by Abraham Lincoln and was originally only suppose to last a year after the war had ended. It was mainly controlled under the war department of the United States and known as a bureau for refugees, freedman, and abandoned lands. Its main function and purpose was to provide assistance to the millions of former slaves in the south as they made the transition from being a slave to a freedman as well as providing them things such as land, education as well as medical needs. The freed people had not thought about their political and civil rights as much due to them mostly wanting to cultivate and acquire their own land. This was due to them associating freedom with them farming and cultivating their own land because before the freedman were emancipated they were bound to the soil and its cultivation . Event though they were free they often found themselves in a bad economical position due to them not always finding or having work. In this situation some southern plantation had given them land to cultivate but at extremely low wages and long contracts. This made the freedman’s bureau set up a judicial system that would affect both the whites and the blacks by having local authorities and agents. This protected and allowed the freed workers in the south to not only receive more fair wages from the plantations but to also hear disputes between the whites who were dealing with free blacks for the first time. The planters even had to provide free transportation to and from work so they could provide for their families security as well as their complete independence. Due to the Bureaus time in the south wasn’t easy and was expensive for the Northerners they had argued that the Bureau was unable to be justified due to southerners opposing the federal Government with the employees and the workers relationship. They also established new churches and schools for the freedman as well as Jobs. In the years between 1865 and 1869 the bureau had also played a huge role in by providing millions of rations to poor needy whites as well as freedman’s families.
