False Morality In The Dark Knight

In todays society, people who do good are generally looked up to and people who do evil are looked down upon. What can be questioned though, is the motive behind why people act the way that they do. Do people act virtuous to create a good image of themselves or because it is truly who they are? The movie The Dark Knight is more than just a film for entertainment, it is a great representation of why humans act the way that they do. Throughout The Dark Knight, many different characters a put into a variety of situations. In each of these situations, the characters are forced to make moral decisions. What determines how people will react to these situations is what they think will bring them true happiness. In The Consolation of Philosophy, Lady Philosophy’s arguments about the pursuit of happiness help to prove that humans in general are naturally virtuous, but in some cases people act to achieve false happiness. The Joker is convinced that people only act with morals because it is a societal norm, not because it is who they really are, “They’re only as good as the world allows …show more content…
“People pursue wealth and riches because they think it will bring them self-sufficiency… and through pleasure the will attain joy” (Lecture Handout, “On Boethius,” September 27, 2016). This is why the mobsters hate Batman. He is a threat to their illegal actions, therefor their riches and false happiness. Lady Philosophy states, “Do you want to pile up large sums of money? Where will you get it if not from those who have it?” (Boethius, The Consolation of Philosophy, pp. 77). The mobsters are dependent on money and power for happiness, therefore dependent on the sources that they obtain money and power from for happiness. If they were to lose their money and power, they would lose their happiness, and that is why it is false

Since the inception of humanity, the ongoing argument has reigned of whether man is basically evil or good. Accompanying this argument is the question: Does humanity have free will to act upon the universe as we please or are we fate’s puppet to do as fate deems worthy? In Loung Ung’s, First They Killed My Father and William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, both question and argument are laid to rest as both authors open the window to the human soul with the cruelty of humans and the differing opinions of good and evil. As philosopher Thomas Hobbes said, “Moral philosophy is nothing else but the science of what is good, and evil, in the conversation, and society of humanity.…

Why be morally good? This is a question that Mattison (2008) examines by explaining two key approaches to morality called the morality of obligation and the morality of happiness. Mattison makes the distinction between the two by using the story of the Ring of Gyges (p.22). Plato’s classic the Republic features a conversation between the characters of Socrates and Glaucon. Glaucon supports his claim that being morally good is not what everyone achieves to be by illustrating the shepard in the Ring of Gyges story.…

In conclusion, justice is the thread that ties the seed of desires to its goal, and the consequences; that is to say that the steps one employs to fulfill the desires requires a call for the use of inner justice which helps in the process of constant discrimination until the aim is achieved. Hsün Tzu’s, “The nature of man is evil,” or Mencius’s, “The nature of man is good (Norden),” are merely reflections of their inner being. The same world, one person sees as evil, and the other as good. What is inside is manifested outside; to translate the inner desires into just act, requires a great sense of rightness. The world needs as much desires as much it needs justice; for without desires there will be no creation, no progress, no motivation to…

Human beings have a great capacity to love, to hate, to do good, and to do evil. We are constantly caught in a binary system of having to choose one or the other, and in some cases both or neither. This duality to choose or not to choose can be viewed in every philosophical way of thought, and often is the starting point of the process. For example, Saint Augustine of Hippo theorized that since man was made in the image of God he (and she) has the intrinsic will to choose to be good or to be evil. Augustine illustrated the duality between good and evil through a story from a childhood story about stealing fruit.…

Which philosopher provides the greatest argument to explain human nature and our ethical being? Without a doubt, I argue that Xunzi’s position of human nature being innately evil is the best position. This argument justifies corrupt behavior simply as inexperience and allows man to grow into virtue through teaching and guidelines. In what follows, I will provide Xunzi’s position on human nature and values. After that, I will describe Mencius’s position and present his counter-arguments to give my argument a basis.…

In this paper I will explain the ways in which Hume believes that one can be considered a virtuous or vicious person. I will discuss Hume’s rejection of reason as a guide to determining a virtuous character, the types of people that he believes are to be considered virtuous, and some issues facing Hume’s arguments on those types of people. I will conclude this paper by arguing in support of Hume is trying to reject the notion that our appraisals of virtue and vice are discoverable by reason. He believes that reason alone is not enough to get someone to perform virtuous acts, and he claims that the attribution of virtue is not guided by morality, but is actually feeling love for someone’s character. Hume believes that, “to have the sense of virtue, is nothing but to feel a satisfaction of a particular kind from the contemplation of a character.…

“The life of money-making is one undertaken under compulsion, and wealth is evidently not the good we are seeking; for it is merely useful and for the sake of something else. And so one might rather take the aforenamed objects to be ends; for they are loved for themselves” (Aristotle, 4). Aristotle explains here that the good we ought to not seek is the gaining of wealth or material things that will distract us from living a virtuous life. “So that in the first place, I put for a general inclination of all mankind a perpetual and restless desire of power after power, that ceaseth only in death. And the cause of this is not always that a man hopes for a more intensive delight than he has already attained to, or that he cannot be content with a moderate power, but because he cannot assure the power and means to live well, which he hath present, without the acquisition of more” (Hobbes, 4).…

At the dawn of America, the question of why society did virtuous deeds remained a notorious fact. Either a colonist followed a Puritan belief, that God expected him or her to live a holy life full of virtuous works and kindness, or he or she followed a humanist life geared toward man’s potential and present earthly life. Today’s America, though, has become a divergent place. Numerous proletariats argue that the general public of the 21st century remains driven to treat others empathetically, simply by the feeling of aiding their fellow man, and while these ideas may be true in numerous cases, logical intellectuals would agree that in actuality, the fear of failure and the need for obligatory reward, motivates society to augment humanity.…

Morals govern the way we live every day, the way we behave, the things we do and the ways in which we interact with each other; everyday people make decisions based on what they believe is right and wrong. But is this really necessary? And if it is, then why? To answer this question, we must first know why we desire being moral and where the ideas of these morals originate. Ultimately morality is required both on a personal and communal level, it is an essential component of an effectively functioning society, and, according to Immanuel Kant, is necessary to one’s happiness.…
