Girls stood, sweating, panting, as Mo yelled at them to continue. “You have 6 more laps to go, I wouldn’t be stopping if I were you!” A girl, legs shaking, collapsed onto the pavement and her face scraped against the black top. Mo yelled at the girls to keep going as he carried the injured girl inside. Another girl, her face pale, stopped running and vomited in the grass. 6 laps later, the girls were finished with their 15 laps around the building. But this was only the beginning of their stretching and conditioning class with Mo at Studio One Dance Company. “Good job today girls, you’re all dismissed.” The girls swarmed their water bottles like ants over food. Small colloquies broke out about what happened to the girl who fell, or about whether or not they would ever have to do that much running again. What is revealed here is that a dancer’s weekly class may be much different than you think. Many people underestimate certain sports, that are actually much more difficult than they may seem to be. One of the most underestimated sports is dance. To find out more, this reporter interviewed a 14 year old dancer, Lauren Alaire about what she does at dance. “We condition every rehearsal, which includes a six minute plank, three hundred sit ups, fifty burpees, we run laps, and a lot more,” she claimed. Many other dancers have had the same experiences, which shows that this is not an anomaly. In fact, one perfect example is the popular tv show, Dance Moms. The girls in this show have dance up to 40 hours a week. “Are you crying? No tears. You save those tears for the pillow in your room, alone. In dance, it is necessary to have strong legs to jump high, leap, turn, and control your balance. In football, you need strong legs in order to sprint fast in order to tackle a player on the other team and to run past the defenders. Also, in both dance and football you need cardiovascular endurance. In dance, this is important to be able to perform your best all the way through a challenging number or series of performance.
