The Role Of Gender Inequality In Today's Society

Many people experience various obstacles that they have to overcome in order to be successful, such as financial issues, racism, and gender inequality. These are some of the most common challenges that people in today’s society have to face.

One of the many obstacles that people deal with is financial issues. There are families that barely have any money to pay for certain things. For example, I will not be receiving my financial aid until mid November. Even though I worked two jobs all summer, I am running low on money. Each week I have to think about if I should skip a meal in order to pay my rent, or if I should take the annual trip to the BPL Plasma Donation Center so I can keep my phone service on. When working in a predominantly male environment, women face numerous obstacles. For example, Hillary Clinton running for the office in the 2015 presidential campaign. Many people have voiced their opinions about her being “unfit” and “not capable” of serving as president because she is a woman. When Hillary Clinton speaks at many of her campaign stops, she always states the same quote, “I’m not asking for people to vote for me because I am a woman. I’m asking people to vote for me on the merits. I think one of the merits is that I am a woman, and I can bring those views and perspectives to the White House” (Clinton). Just like officer Nancy Taylor in the movie Conviction, she too faces obstacles by being the only woman in a male dominant enviroment. “You have no idea what it’s like being the only woman on the force” (Goldwyn). No matter what the occupation may be, many women have to face discrimination and issues when working with a majority of males. Although women are the victims of gender inequality, men also have to face challenges, rather it be in the workplace or the community. For instance, about two weeks ago my niece and I were at home talking about her upcoming divorce trial and we heard a knock at the door. It turned out to be my nephew in law, and he was there to try and take his daughter (my great-niece) away. Of course my niece was not going to allow him to take her because they had no visitation plans worked out yet legally and so she called the police. Before the police got there, my niece and I had sat down with Brian (her husband), and talked about the situation. Brian was calm throughout the entire conversation and said that he didn’t mean any harm. When the police got there, they immediately put Brian into handcuffs and put him in the cop car. My niece proceeded to tell them that detaining him was not necessary, and the police officer responded with, “he is

According to Steinem, Clinton and other qualified female candidates could not use the same style as Obama or Bill Clinton. If they did, they would be considered too emotional. There is no ”right way” for a woman to be in a powerful public role without being considered a “bitch.” Steinem declares her support for Clinton over Obama because Clinton has “no masculinity to prove.” She writes about her concern that Obama was seen as unifying due to race while Clinton was seen as divisive about gender.…

Courage Against Conflicting Odds: Barbara Boxer Being a woman in office is particularly hard regarding the fact that 80 percent of the House of Representatives are male, and female congresswomen make up a small 19.4 percent. The low percentage of females in elected positions makes it easier for the respect that they are given to be degrading. Barbara Boxer had no fear when entering the campaign for House of Representatives and in 1982, despite her opponent being a male figure, she won the election only by 52 percent of the vote. As she ran for reelection the next four times, she was undeniably assigned California’s representative with never dropping below 67 percent of the vote. When she had the opportunity to run for the U.S Senate, she conquered the campaign against all men during her first term and again for…

For many, this silencing proves insignificant because it will not directly affect her actions in the White House. However, her advocation of the women’s rights movement contradicts her actions. Even though I applied for financial aid I was denied. I came to learn that the federal formula was weighted not only by income but also by assets. So my parent’s small nest egg, a modest home with sundry repairs to come and a mortgage to be paid every month for the next ten years, counted against me. I’d attend classes during the early morning hours, late afternoons, evenings and weekends as long as it didn’t interfere with my work hours. When breaks came around, while some of my friends were off on vacation or volunteering in faraway countries, I worked extra hours.…

The times had changed and the slavery period had passed, however, the imbalance between human identity and its perception remains today. The forms of racism transformed from legal discrimination into masked but obvious problem. Secondly, in order to show how gender inequality is harmful to society, I will point out its dangers. Some people think that pursuing gender equality is harmful to women. “Feminism Has Harmed Women by Eliminating Natural Gender Roles”, by Nicole M. Kooistra states that “Women have bought into a feminist mystique that has left them more alone and conflicted in their pursuit of fulfillment than ever before.” This mentality that women cannot fulfil themselves unless they get married, have children, cook, and clean is a disastrous mindset. Women no longer feel obligated to pursue the ‘1950’s housewife’ character.…
