Prejudice And Racism

Prejudice and Racism in Today's Society Prejudice: a preconceived notion with no basis in fact or actual experience (Oxford Dictionary). Today, many have blocked out prejudice and racism around them. However, prejudice and racism are just as prevalent as they were when Harper Lee wrote about the story of Scout Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Segregation no longer has a public face as it did in the time of Jim Crow. Nor do people gather to watch and “enjoy” public lynchings. However, racism still exists today, albeit substantially more subtle, yet it is just as menacing. Harper Lee was one of many authors of her time who attempted to alter society’s ideas about race and to try to eliminate prejudice. Lee wrote her first novel to expose the prejudice and racism that existed in society at the time, in its true ugly form. Unfortunately, prejudice and racism continue to ravage our society today. Whenever we turn on the news, go to school, or simply walk outside, prejudice presents itself like a monster that has yet to be slain.
In modern society, though there are many activists against it, prejudice thrives in the heart of the United States. In “To Kill a Mockingbird,” prejudice is not only shown in the form of racism, but also in the form of judgement and cruelty against Arthur “Boo” Radley.
