The Case of Lena Lena, a community college freshman, has stopped by to discuss her plans for spring enrollment. Lena was a good student in high school graduating with a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and was actively involved as her senior class treasurer. Lena was confident that she would be successful in college and was excited to be the first person in her family to attend college. With her experience working in her family’s Latina grocery store and as class treasurer, Lena was certain that she would excel as a business major. Upon completion of the associate in business degree, Lena hopes to transfer to the local four-year university to obtain her bachelor’s degree in business. There are several reasons why Lena could be doing poorly in her business class. She mentions that she finds some of the financial concepts confusing. This may be true; Lena is likely being introduced to new concepts that she does not quite understand. However, as a freshman who was taking 15 credit hours her first semester along with trying to help in her family store, it might just be that Lena has not allowed herself enough time to do well in each class. Lena could be facing challenges that first-generation students often experience such as balancing work while attending school full-time or meeting other family obligations while attending school. Academic advising at a community college is unique because of the variety of characteristics that make up their student population. The population of a community college is typically a first-generation college student, commuter, and generally an underprepared student (King, 2002). Your community college utilizes the self-contained model of academic advising, one where all advising from the first day of orientation to graduation takes place at one central location (King, 2008). Lena is fortunate that through the advising services provided hopefully a mentoring relationship will develop which will contribute to her increased understanding of the entire educational experience.
