Great Essays
Vince Lombardi What do you think when you hear Ethical and Visionary Leader? I’ll tell you what I think, I think of the legendary football coach Vince Lombardi. Vince Lombardi once said, “You don’t do things right once in a while…you do them right all the time” (Vince Lombardi’s Quotes, 2018). Everyone has their own opinions on who an Ethical leader and Visionary leader is, to me a great leader is someone who builds trust, credibility, and respect for both you and the organization and guide you to success. I feel Lombardi is both a visionary and ethical leader. The reasons why I feel Lombardi is a visionary and ethical leader, are directly tied to his ability to motivate and lead his team during tough racial times. Lastly, I will discuss …show more content…
Some of the ethical leadership traits he possessed, were professionalism, self-control, humility, moral courage, and personal discipline (Lombardi, 2003). We all know Lombardi was a successful coach, won the first two Super Bowls, and led the worst team in the league to the best team, but what you don’t know is some of the ethical dilemmas and ethical traps, he dealt with as a coach during the 1960’s (BCEE, 2017a). During this time there was lots of racism in the country, and it was no different on the football field. He made it clear he would not fall for the ethical trap of ethical relativism or Worry over Image (BCEE, 2017a). He went against the society norm and told coaches and players they would be thrown off the team, if they displayed behaviors of racism (Maraniss, 1999). The public didn’t always agree with this kind of thinking, but he was never worried about his image, and was only concerned about making the best ethical and organizational decisions for his team. As a coach and role model, he insisted to his team and the public that there were no barriers on the team, and each player and coach were equal, both racially and socially (Maraniss, 1999). This behavior he displayed helped build a unified …show more content…
Some of the similar traits I share with Lombardi are, Integrity, competence, inspiring, and accountability. I would like to build on my ability to get the absolute most out of each Airman, as Lombardi did with his players. For example, in my section the NCO’s are failing to progress with their CCAF degrees. I have tried to motivate them in the past by giving them extra time to sign up for classes and complete the paperwork. After seeing the drive Lombardi has, I feel like I gave up to quickly and failed to give them a clear picture of the future, and provide them with something that is important to them in an effort to get them to jump start their profession growth in the right direction (BCEE, 2017c). In the future, I will build them a road map of what their career will look like with a degree and one without a degree. Increasing my ability to instill inspirational motivation to my followers will give them energy toward the mission, and give them a strong sense of purpose (BCEE,

He had to be able to stand up in the face of merciless persecution and not retaliate” After reading about his early life, it is not amazing that he had the athletic talent but that he could actually take verbal and physical abuse for two long years without ever defending himself. During his early career he experienced vicious taunts, bottle throwing, inability to get adequate accommodations or food while traveling with the team as well as biased reporting, all because he was a black man in a white privileged nation. To me this seemed a stark contrast to the young Army officer, so it really showcased his ability to sacrifice self for future generations and this is a rare quality. It reminded me of the philosophy and tactics of Martin Luther King Jr., C.O.R.E. and S.N.C.C. as they were fighting racism peacefully. He did finally reach a point when he could self- advocate and speak out against players, fans and the press about his differential treatment based on his skin color.…

One of the many Army clichés LTC Kunk tries to operate by is “teach, coach, [and] mentor” (Fredrick, 2017, p 27). Teaching, coaching, and mentoring is defined as “…[instructing] by precept, example, or experience”, “one who instructs or trains, and “a trusted counselor or guide”, respectively. With this knowledge, it becomes clear if a person were to follow these three ideals they would more than likely be an engaged and effective leader. The significance of being an engaged leader is often understated in many corporations and even more so within the United States Army. This has the potential to birth and cultivate a multitude of problems.…

When he came there he was making a huge difference in the community. If it wasn’t for him, then the team wouldn’t of been able to get through their differences and come together. He also impacted the older adults in the community. He showed them that even if they did whatever in their power to try to break him he still was going to coach, and that showed courage and dedication that the team needed to see. When he and the other coaches didn’t see eye to eye, he showed them that just because he was a different race, he couldn’t be a good example to the football…

A common theme in sports is the friction between team owners and players in regards to salary and race. Just recently in this past year, the NBA commissioner ordered LA Clippers Donald Sterling out of his team’s business and urging him to sell due to racist remarks. (Greg Botelho, 2014) Still in 2014, there is racial discrimination just as in the 1920’s, 30’s, and 40’s, even though Abe Saperstein was known as the person who had forced integration of African Americans into basketball. Abe Saperstein started the Harlem Globetrotters. The Globetrotters were an all-black team that had amazing talent.…

Introduction Some may argue Colin Kaepernick to be the most talked about athlete in today’s sports era. Others however, may say he and his anthem-kneeling dispute have brought about a great disruption upon our country and what it means to be an American. Kaepernick has brought about what is arguably the most substantial complication yet to be seen in all professional sports, and as the commissioner of the National Football League (NFL), Rodger Goodell, finds himself stuck in the middle of the largest dilemma brought upon him in his entire tenure with the NFL. And as he tries to find a solution suitable to all races and religions, he only seems to be digging himself into a bigger hole and furthermore having no explanation to give the media…

The NFL has been the center of many ethical controversies. Many of these controversies come to the forefront of media outlets around the time of the Super Bowl. Many companies have even been known to produce advertisements specifically for the reason of creating a situation in which their ads will disrupt the normal family oriented flow of the Super Bowl. These two parts come together to form one criterion in our minds because the socially aware culture that both organizations are in need of displaying while Jerry Richardson is making his decision on Greg Hardy. Domestic violence incidents have had such an incredibly negative impact on the NFL thus far that Jerry needs to seriously take into account of how previous cases dealt with by the NFL and other teams have affected the public’s view of the NFL.
