What does the bulletin board in the hallway, the right side of your computer screen, and the I- 60 have in common? You may be thinking that there is no relationship between the three things, but it’s so obvious and so prevalent that you become so used to it that it only affects your subconscious. All three are locations and mediums for advertisement. We live in a world cluttered with an overwhelming amount of advertisements for marketing. Marketing techniques and strategies can even effect things as trivial as a birthday card for a child. The most influential factors, used to attract people to children’s cards, is an individual’s age and gender.
Strolling down the isle of a Hallmark, you see yellow and white signs labeling each section.

A common trend between the messages was also observed. Many of the girls’ cards used words such as “perfect”, “pretty”, and “cute”. They also contained a lot of play on words including substituting “fairy for the word “very” or “purr-fect” instead of “perfect”. These trends with the messages on girls’ cards correlated with stereotypical conceptions that girls are supposed to be fragile and sweet, but smarter than boys, which is why a lot of the cards contain a lot of word play. In comparison, cards designed for boys include catch phrases and rhyming jokes. Many of the boy’s cards contained words like “adventure”, “awesome”, “special” and “strong”. A lot of the messages included themed catch phrases and jokes. Advertisers know how much these television shows influence the youth, which is why normally when they are marketing things to our youth they piggy back of the concepts of the most popular TV shows. It was observed that a few of the boy cards contained rough and athletic ninjas while a few of the girl cards contained well dressed fairies and princesses. In addition, many of the boy card contained goofy, and bold foil letters, while the girl cards contained glitter and sparkles.
