Texting while driving is a form of ‘distracted driving.’ The term not only applys to using cell phones when behind the wheel, but also to actions such as eating, drinking, putting on make-up, smoking, and using other devices such as iPods and GPSs. These activities lead to “inattention blindness” which defers drivers focus from the road to the device within their line of view. Distracted driving has thoroughly increased since the invention of new technologies. Texting is physically and visually impairing while driving (Hanes, Massis). It should be banned in the remaining thirty-two states to prevent further vehicle accidents involving texting while driving. On September 12, 2008, the engineer of a two-hundred-and-twenty-five passenger train missed a stop signal and collided into a freight train, killing twenty-five people. It was later reported that two teenagers had been sent text messages from the engineer just moments before the crash (Current Events). Stephanie Hanes and Julie Masis introduce driving and texting as the “new drunk driving.” Using any type of device or phone when behind the wheel is extremely hazardous. Drivers on cell phones have the same reaction speed as a driver who is inebriated. Cell phone users are four times more likely to cause an automobile accident (Hanes, Masis). According to a Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study, texting truck drivers are twenty-three times more likely to create a crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that six-thousand people were killed in 2008 by distracted drivers and five-hundred-and-fifteen-thousand were injured (USA Today). It’s difficult to finalize statistics involving texting while driving because many drivers will not admit to being on their cell phones, especially when involved in an automobile accident.
