The Insurgency
Waking up to see a wall, living with the pain of knowing that my father and brother are gone, knowing that I could be next. The world I lived in was a sorrowful place. I never saw my mother, she was always away at the border patrolling for trespassers; but when she was home, she was too tired to even talk to me. So, I had to fend for myself. Every day I got up, got dressed, and walked to school. On the way to school, sometimes I picked up breakfast, but usually I wasn't hungry enough to eat. School was always a blur. Before my brother was killed, we used to walk to school together and eat breakfast. Now, I can't even bear the thought of eating without him. I live in The Nation, on the South side of the border. Twins ?” he hesitated. I nodded my head in amazement. We stood there for a minute, realizing what we had just discovered “We need to make sure this is true,” I commented, “ And there is only one way to find out.”
Milo and I formed a plan.
“Okay” he declared, “first we get past the border , then we get to the Hall of Files, but we have to get past the fence --” “What fence” I interrupted -“There's an electromagnetic fence my uncle put up around the Hall of Files so nobody could get in our out. If we touch it, we're goners.” I gulped.

Two of them were wearing helmets and uniforms, however, the other guard was dressed in a white button down suit and she was wearing a gold hat. On her uniform her badge read: Colonel Diane. One of the guards stopped us. Milo gave her the badge and she opened the gate, but she kept staring at me. I looked closely at her, her badge read: Private

She pulled me into a tight hug and whispered into my ear
“Soldier” Colonel Diane commanded, “get back in your formation!” My mom stood still.
“Soldier,” the colonel warned as she pulled out her gun and aimed it at my mom, but my mom stayed still.
-“Max we need to go, now” Milo whispered urgently
-“ No --” I snapped
-“No Max, we need to go” Milo grabbed my hand and started running . I turned around to look at my mom; she was lying on the ground, lifeless. I could feel the anger swelling in my body. My eyes are blurring and all I can think about was how she was my only family left, and now she was gone. Max and I ran. I watched his face go pale when he saw his mother get carried away.
“This is all my uncle’s fault” I thought. When we made it to the nearest building, we leaned up against the wall to catch our breath.
“ Max” I sighed “I'm so sorry.” He looked up at me and then looked away. I wasn't really sorry though, I had no idea what it was like to have family. We sat in silence, looking at the tall buildings in front of us. I examined the crystal glass; the silky clouds reflecting on each perfect piece. If only life was that
