The attribution of roles within the family due to ‘characteristics’ can often be a failure for multiple reasons. In terms of my family, we never experienced a ‘reliable man’ in the role of father. However, we didn 't long experience the bad role-model, as when he began being a detrimental role-model, my mother left him (taking my brother and me with her) my mother then undertook the roles which had been attributed to my father, (mainly the roles attributed to the male of the family). She became the breadwinner of the family, whilst still trying to maintain the caring and nurturing surroundings we had become familiar with. When my brother and I refused to visit my father any longer, she began introducing more of our extended family into our lives in larger amounts, and my brother and I began staying at my grandparents one night a week, in which we learnt a lot which my father didn 't have the ability to nor would he ha taught us, from my grandparents, mainly my grandfather. This was the beginning of what became our “normative” family type, due to the contribution from the extended family network that was created.
