Underage Drinking
“Teen alcohol use kills 4,700 people each year - that’s more than all illegal drugs combined” (Hingson) more teens are killed by one of the commodities that the most people do. Everyone makes a big deal about how our kids are overdosing on drugs and are doing gateway drugs that will lead to hard drugs, but yet all those combined don 't account for the death toll of alcohol. Why is that? Some would say it is because alcohol is so harmful and abusive to the human body. Others would argue that the reason is because there is no safe way to do it. Kids want to drink so they go out in the woods, over to a buddies house when his parents are gone, or any way to do so without being able to be seen in public. Then when that kid has

What do we think those numbers would be in college when kids have friends over 21, they don 't have parents present, they have extreme stress, and they are just now finding out what freedom feels like. These kids are not drinking in some place they can all spend the night they are not all at a safe place to stay and or crash, so they have to have a way to …show more content…
If the drinking age was 18 parents would also be more open and accepting to kids drinking at those ages even if they still live at home. If at the age of 18 you can join the military, you can sign papers for yourself, and you can choose to smoke or do tobacco products (which account to even more deaths and health issues than alcohol). How many parents actually know their kids drink “About one in seven teens binge drinks, yet only 1 in 100 parents believe his or her teen binge drinks” (Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality). So if the kids parents don 't know how are kids doing it? If you binge drink you are not driving, you are not calling your parents to pick you up, so how are kids getting away with it? Not only does the behavior affect their health but it also causes a need to do it quickly instead of over time in the social event. "The situation would be vastly easier to manage, these educators say, if they could allow the kids to drink in public – thus obviating the "pre-game" binge – and provide adult presence at the parties. (Reid). Although, allowing teenagers to drink alcohol at a younger age might completely alter their lifestyle, one can't guarantee that 100% of teens are going to immediately adjust and learn to drink responsibly nor does it guarantee how any social events will be altered by doing…

From the Article “Return the Drinking Age to 18, and Enforce It” by Gabrielle Glaser, the author argues that the drinking age should be returned to eighteen, and enforced heavily. In the article, she argues that the current system which only allows people who are twenty-one and older to purchase and drink alcohol is forcing high school and college kids to partake in risky binge drinking behavior. Also, she compares today’s drinking attitude of underage kids to the attitude of people in the prohibition era. In the prohibition era, there were speakeasies. The goal at these places was to drink as much and as soon as possible, because no one ever knew when the police would show up.…

When a person turns 18, he or she is allowed to vote, enlist in the military, get married, serve on juries, and partake in many other parts of adult life except for consuming alcohol. S. Georgia Nugent, president emerita of Kenyon College claims that “the illogic of the situation is patent”(Nugent). Students are taught from a young age to make rational decisions based on logical arguments. Nugent asserts “In the case of the minimum drinking age, they can hardly look to their elders to find that kind of behavior modeled”(Nugent). She argues the irrationality of the current drinking, and I agree because of the amount of other responsibilities 18 year olds receive when they become an adult.…

Do you know someone that has consumed alcohol at an early age? Growing up alcohol was very evident in my local junior high and high school. My peers consistently talked about going out on the weekends, sometimes even the week and boasting about being the biggest drinker at a local bar they snuck in to or even going as far as describing extravagant narratives about not remembering the night before from partying too extensively. Underage drinking on college campuses are a common issue nationwide. While students and faculty alike are all aware of the issue not much is done or can be done to end underage consumption.…

The reality is that even with the drinking age being twenty one, most teens under twenty one will still and can still buy or get alcoholic drinks. Most people want what they can’t get and that’s just human nature. If you can possess alcohol at a younger age then that would reduce the probability of you making rash decisions on overdrinking. "When we raise the drinking age to 21, which incidentally is the highest in the world, it makes drinking more attractive to young people," says David J. Hanson, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Potsdam. This quote from David J. Hanson explains that very well.…

Lowering the drinking age will cause chaos Everyday there is a handful of teenagers who illegally drink alcohol. In recent discussions of changing the legal drinking age to 18, a controversial issue has been whether it is a good idea or not. On one hand some argue that if teens are old enough to serve our country then they should be able to drink. On the other hand, however, others maintain that not all teenagers are responsible enough to drink because they still act immature. While some people believe that changing the drinking age is a good idea it could lead to more drunk driving accidents, a higher death rate in colleges, and violence between teens in high schools and colleges.…

The first thing I want to point out is on alcoholpolicymd.com, it says, “Annual alcohol use by high school seniors dropped from 87% in 1983 (before passage of the national MLDA law) to 73.2% in 2000.” This obviously shows that even though there still is illegal drinking, it has dropped since MLDA 21. If we lowered the legal drinking age I think that the numbers would fly off the charts, the only reason that the 27.8% is not drinking is because they are scared of going to jail. In addition, I found this on the same website, “alcohol producers heavily target the college demographic through magazine, billboard, internet, and television advertising, as well as spring break promotions, on-site marketing, contests, concerts, and sporting events.” This shows that alcohol companies are trying to get young adults to see that it is fun to drink and have parties.…

Although 18 year olds are considered adults, some think that they are still not mature enough to make to correct choices about alcohol. Those who think that keeping the drinking age at a higher minimum are trying to keep the demand for alcohol down and are also trying to keep the roads safer from drunk drivers. People between the ages of 18 and 20 will have just started college for the most part and don’t need alcohol interfering with their studies and their ability to succeed in life. Condoning the drinking of newly formed adults would only cause chaos and cause more fatalities. To MADD the cost of drinking outweighs the benefits since the highest numbers of fatalities in the United States are due to alcohol related deaths.…

Secondly, since the drinking age has been risen to 21 in 1984 by congress, drunk driving deaths have been cut in half with the most of the drops being people aged 16 to 20 years old. Around the mid-1970s, alcohol was what caused over 60 percent of traffic accidents. When a person consumes too much alcohol their general vision becomes blurred, the person experiences a loss of depth perception, and peripheral vision becomes extremely blurry. If a person is driving while intoxicated, that person would not be able to react quick enough if a car in front of them suddenly breaks or if an object rolls across the road. The driver may not even be aware of how close they are driving in relation to the nearby cars, or be able to even drive in a straight line.…
