Reflection Of Nursing As Profession

Decent Essays
Although normal, it is hard to admit there are parts of the nursing profession that are more interesting than others. Despite knowing there is information I need to learn, there are some topics that still cause an instant feeling of dread when I read the headline. On the other hand, I read some headings that make me wish I could skip straight to that module. Topics I am the most interested in are (1) Healthcare Policy and Economics, (2) Legal and Ethical Issues and (3) Core Healthcare Professional Competencies. However, topics that are on the less interesting are (1) Nursing Education, Accreditation and Regulation and (2) Nursing as Profession. I want to make a huge impact in the field of nursing. Without an understanding of Healthcare Policy …show more content…
Healthcare competencies are continuously changing and require constant updates and education on the nurses’ part to stay relevant. Knowledge and understanding of core competencies affect the entire scope of nursing practice. Through this class and I have the platform to learn about core competencies through educational texts and networking with other nurses around the country—which excites me more than the same topic in a traditional classroom …show more content…

Do mandated nurse-patient ratios really impact quality and safe patient care? Or is the impact of extra dollars spent on staffing felt in other budgetary categories that equally affect the nurses’ ability to deliver quality and safe patient care? The topic of nurse-patient ratios is relevant in almost every module in this course—Healthcare Policy and Economics, Legal and Ethical Issues, Nursing as a Profession, and Critical Healthcare Issues of Today. Currently, it is a topic of discussion in my local community as well as the hospital that employs

Unionization is good for the nursing profession because it gives power and strength to nurses who can negotiate contracts in numbers and can identify working conditions, including acceptable nurse-to-patient ratios, standard of care, and overtime, pay scale, benefits, and paid time off. According to Sanders and McCutcheon (####), a major issue in the negotiations is the nurse-to-patient staffing ratios. In 1999 California became the first state to mandate minimum nurse-to-patient ratios in hospitals (Coffman, Seago, Spetz, 2002). Nurses believed in acceptable nurse-to-patient ratios and wanted to prevent jeopardizing quality patient care and prevent nurses from leaving the profession.…

I have a similar view compare to yours, I firmly believe that nurses or advance practice nurses do apply theories, models and principle in daily nursing practice, however, the theories, models and principles are simply gone unnoticed. There is room for improvement to enhance the awareness of theories, models and principles that are being applied, however I believe that does not represent the theory-practice gap. I appreciate your expression on how you have gained deeper understanding of the theories that you have learned, and you are planning on including more theories into future practice. I have adjusted my philosophy after the semester of learning. At beginning of the semester, I simply believe one particular theory will support my advance…

Final Level/Program Reflection I began the nursing program with very minimal nursing knowledge. Throughout the curriculum, I learned the fundamental skills of being a nurse, but my learning went further than skills. The greatest accomplishment I will take away from this program is an improved understanding of what nursing is: facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering, protection and promotion of health, and advocacy for patients, families, and communities. This idea has been discussed numerous times throughout the curriculum, and as I approach graduation, I finally appreciate the meaning of "what is nursing.…

Being a nurse does not mean that you simply take vital signs or give medication to a patient, being a nurse is being a caregiver, an educator, a patient’s advocate and much more. There are many components that a nurse should meet or should be able to accomplish. The Mississippi Nursing Competency Model is a model that allows nurses enhance their education and practice, also facilitates articulation across nursing education programs and allows employers to know what are the different skills performed by the different educational degrees. The competencies include: patient-centered care, professionalism, leadership, systems-based practice, informatics and technology, communication, teamwork and collaboration, safety, quality improvement and evidence-based practice. Because this was my first clinical experience, there were certain competencies that I was not able to either accomplish or I accomplished very little, like leadership or…

According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), one of the key recommendations for structural change in the health care profession is “Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression (The Future of, 2010). In my opinion this should be one of the highest priorities for Registered Nurses (RN). As nursing continuously evolves the practice of nursing continues to change as well. During these times we are faced with more critically ill patients as well as a faster growing population of ill patients. The elderly are living longer than they did 20 years ago and their comorbidities make their care challenging.…

Nursing, from the perspective of a first-year nursing student, is a profession that is underestimated. Nurses are the backbone of all health care facilities; without them, quality of care would greatly decrease. Through the influence of maternal figures in my family, along with an inherent interest in health care and a strong desire to care for others, I was drawn to the profession of nursing. However, a nurse requires more than merely an interest and the desire to care for others. During my first few months as a nursing student, my understanding of nursing, or lack thereof has come to light.…
