One can make the case that humans have never made such great technological improvements in any time period of such brevity in our history. The advances in during that time period included the boom, meaning the creation or significant advancement, of technologies such as IBM’s personal computer, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), CD-ROMs, network storage, graphics processors, e-mail, Televisions, telephones, satellites, personal computers in general, and many more. Ideas and information were spread across the planet at rates previously unimaginable. As Stephen Tansey said, “Global productivity should soar as the latest innovations and techniques become available more rapidly and can be utilized by a better-educated workforce. …the spread of mutual knowledge and increased communication will enhance international understanding.” …show more content…
Our societies, especially the U.S., added a hefty amount of internet usage and television to their daily lives. Due to that fact, they have had to decrease time spent on other leisurely activities and some say that this increased technology has affected our society negatively – such as the weakening of family bonds, community life, and creativity (Tansey). The ability to communicate has significantly changed in the past century. From the invention of the telegram in 1837 to the development of the modern-day telephone in the 2000s, the means of communication have allowed humans to reduce delivery time and stay up to date at the rate in which events occur. Sherry Turkle, a psychology professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, argues that the once brilliant and practical development of technology negatively affects human intimacy in her book, Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other. She examines the use of technology and how it allows people to hide behind a screen to essentially create their ideal person and maintain composure.…

In “Connectivity and Its Discontents,” Sherry Turkle states that the wide use of technology is affecting the foundation of which people are building their relationships off of. People crave the affection and connection of other people. However, what we believe to be known as “connecting” is completely based off of our technological needs. When we are physically there with another person we tend to doze off and connect with our technology more than we are actually connecting with the person we’re physically with. We have sacrificed conversation for mere connection.…

One particular study conducted in 2009 by Elisa Pigeron suggest that the Internet is becoming a medium that facilitates contact with family members and friends. Researchers concluded that “Our media-saturated social worlds influence family relationships and dynamics. Traditional evenings spent together eating around the family table and telling stories are now long gone,” (2009, p. 56). Although technology can be seen as having a detrimental effect on the family developmental values, it has the potential to bring people together closer than ever before. Pigeron argues in her analysis, “Without boundaries of time and place, features of technological devices allow individuals to foster familial bonds and relationships by creating the perpetual ability to connect with others”.…
