Grammar and Vocabulary are the two foundations of English language and they affect each other individually. Therefore, both of them should be emphasize in English language teaching. According to Greenbaum and Nelson (2002), Grammar refers to the set of rules that allow people to combine words in language into larger units. Mastering grammar well will contribute greatly to reading, writing and speaking. In grammar leaning, the student’s attitude matters. Meanwhile, the teaching methods are also the key factor for students to master well. So to some extent, the teaching method in class would affect the students’ studying of grammar. 2.2 Disadvantages of Miss Wong’s method
At the same time, the disadvantages are also distinct. In fact, her approach would fit better for the talented students. However, she is teaching in a Band 3 school in Hong Kong. As a result, according to her speaking, she found some students still got confused with the reason to use a past tense verb in an if-clause when referring to imaginary situations. In other words, the students still do not fully understand the usage of conventional sentence. Another weakness is that there are no students’ involvements in class. No group discussion, no pair presentation. It is quite dull and vapid. As a coincidence, students get bored with grammar and continually make mistakes in contextual situation.
In conclusion, the teaching effectiveness of Miss Wong is not bad, but still it could be improved greatly. The method that she used is quite popular and general among most secondary school teachers. Her approach will result in a class filled with bored and exhausted students who may give wonderful result in tests but
