1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love. I, then, found my passion and decided I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. 6 Finding the perfect school to attend for your career choice is the first of many important things you must do before being ready to start your career. In Oklahoma, plenty of colleges offer elementary school teaching programs. I have been contemplating for quite some time now, and because the options are so numerous, I want to choose my place of education based on my previous hopes and dreams of attending a particular college. “So, Ellen, what are your plans for after graduation?” a nosy, albeit well meaning, great-aunt asks. I stare into her intent, keen expression as it bores into me. She is leant forward, on the edge of the armchair, facing me, while maintaining her friendly demeanor in tone, her expression remains unreadable. Her sudden undivided attention shines a bright spotlight on me and I know she is hanging on to every breath I take, before I even speak.…

The idea that “a teacher affects eternity” presented by Henry Adams is a powerful one that has always made me stop and pause. Coming from a family of teachers, I have always had much respect for the profession and admired my relatives who have given countless hours, wisdom, and love to their students. I have been fortunate to witness firsthand the idea that Adams has put forth, as I have seen my mom and other relatives truly impact their now adult students. Because of this inspiration, I have decided to pursue teaching and want to better understand the education I will need to become one and what life looks like as a teacher. To understand what the life of a teacher is like, I will gain information about education, day-to-day interaction, and…

Playing Make Believe It is three thirty on a monday afternoon as I board my yellow bus to go home after a day of school at Herbert Hoover Elementary. I walked through my front door, threw my blue butterfly backpack onto the hook, and ran directly up to my room. At the time, it could be more accurately referred to as my classroom. Inside yellow and blue painted walls with a chalkboard and cliche classroom posters, I taught my class of invisible students the exact same lesson Mrs. Molle taught that day in my first grade class.…

As a matter of fact, my family tree is filled with educators; teaching may even be a genetic inclination. Moreover, I thoroughly enjoyed instructing both kids and adults in the limited capacities I have, such as coaching athletics and tutoring. The confluence of my experiences abroad and personal proclivity toward teaching has bolstered my resolve to become a teacher but also made me understand that eschewing my own education was hampering my own development. I plan to go just for my Bachelors Degree so hopefully it will take me around four years to complete college and begin being a teacher, it may take longer due to different things that can come up during the school year or if I am having issues with getting all of the things I need to graduate but hopefully it will only be the four years I am shooting for.
