Phoenix in the story is the oldest person she knows yet the strongest to I would say for all she’s done just to get her grandson some medicine he needs from town. When Phoenix talks aloud to herself it allows the reader to imagine the warm, comical, young spirited side of her. The story relies heavily on subtext and symbolism, Welty managed to use her sensibility to represent the powerful force of determination, sacrifice, and love. Welty describes every detail of long and life-risking journey that Phoenix Jackson had gone through.
