Symbolic Connotations In A Worn Path, By Eudora Welty

A manifold of symbolic connotations can be made in “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty. Eudora Welty’s explanation of symbolism basically says how the Character Phoenix Jackson goes out of her way to do all that she can for her grandson because he is sick and can’t take care of him-self. She is a good grandmother by going out of her to take the whole day to walk all the way into town to get him his medicine. During her excursion she talks aloud to herself coaxing before, but this one seems significantly harder to manage. Eudora Welty “A Worn Path” is about the emphasis on the natural symbolism of the surroundings. Welty says how she thought the Thorny Bush was a “pretty little green bush” and how she thought the Scarecrow was a dancing ghost.

Phoenix in the story is the oldest person she knows yet the strongest to I would say for all she’s done just to get her grandson some medicine he needs from town. When Phoenix talks aloud to herself it allows the reader to imagine the warm, comical, young spirited side of her. The story relies heavily on subtext and symbolism, Welty managed to use her sensibility to represent the powerful force of determination, sacrifice, and love. Welty describes every detail of long and life-risking journey that Phoenix Jackson had gone through.
