The Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995 was so horrible because the truck with the bomb was able to be placed right in front of the building. Similar events took place at embassies and other United States controlled buildings over the years. New and existing buildings are now provided with barriers and standoff distance from roads to prevent the reoccurrence of such an event. Additional security and access control are additional measures used to prevent terrorist attacks on public and private buildings (Kemp 2012, p. 32). Protection of information systems is the newest field within the homeland security spectrum. Security systems both physical and virtual are utilized to safeguard information from being copied, stolen, or destroyed. This is complicated by the fact that cyber-attacks can originate from hundreds of miles away and the source can be complicated to determine (Kemp 2012, p. 33). Without the constant development of plans and security features homeland security becomes impossible. DHS and other federal, state, local, and private entities are constantly working to improve the resiliency of the homeland.
Conclusion
The landscape for future threats to homeland security is constantly evolving and new agencies, procedures, and policies will be required to address such issues. The past demonstrates how threats are constantly evolving. Each past threat has led to development of new policies and technologies. With the work of current and future agencies this will continue to be the case. When established DHS developed procedures in order to pass information about threats and share intelligence resources. Then they developed a way for different agencies at different levels of government to work together during an emergency and to have a standard way to establish a chain of command and to communicate. DHS has also developed training and preparedness procedures in order to improve the resiliency of the general population and further improve overall homeland
